Okitsme Posted October 14, 2007 Report Posted October 14, 2007 Hi Peeps, Can anyone please adise me what to do. I think two of my pigeons have fallen down the neighbours chimney yesterday. I have no friggin idea of how to get the out. Please help.
Roland Posted October 14, 2007 Report Posted October 14, 2007 Fire Brigade or Gas .... Niether can charge, as it is classed as a danger.... but Gas board want paying to re fit pipes, or leave a tape on the fire etc. But of course any 'Corgi' mate can do that too!

Okitsme Posted October 14, 2007 Author Report Posted October 14, 2007 Thanks guys, will try anything at the moment. Will let you know if I get them out. David
thunderboult Posted October 14, 2007 Report Posted October 14, 2007 this happened to 1 of my birds(yb) a couple of years ago, my mate went up on the roof had a look down the chimmney pot and said it was on a ledge about 4ft down, we put a bamboo with a ring on the end made out of coat hanger wire about the size of football stretched a bag over the loop to catch the bird in ,my mate got it out all covered in soot
Okitsme Posted October 14, 2007 Author Report Posted October 14, 2007 Hi Peeps, Well I called the firebrigade and they basically told me to leave the birds where they are as it was not safe to get on top of the roof. We have almost totalled my neighbours house trying to find the pigeons in the chimney and I have been able to retrieve one. The other one is still missing but I really hope we find it. Thanks for all the help. David
Okitsme Posted October 14, 2007 Author Report Posted October 14, 2007 Hi Guys, hopefully there is a builder on here somewhere who can give me some advice. We removed two bricks from the chimney breast inside the house loft and apparently the chimney splits in two tunnels because their used to be fireplaces in the two bedrooms. The fireplace in the livingroom is bricked up but the vent infront was removed and the inside of the fireplace is stacked with loose bricks and rubbish. I got the first pigeon out through the vent in the one bedroom after pushing it down with wire. It could not have fallen further than the vent as it was blocked up. Now I need to know if the other pigeon could have fallen to the other rooms vent area or down to the livingroom fireplace. I stuck my camera up the holes and you can see that the chimney slopes of at places but there is no sign of the other pigeon. Could one be sitting on a ledge somewhere as I have no idea how a chimney looks on the inside. Also how do two pigeons fall down the same hole? Pigeon racing is one thing but letting an animal suffer is not my cup of tea and it is making me think wether I am cut out for this sport. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks David
REDCHEQHEN Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 I'm not a builder, but there are ledges in chimneys and it could be sitting on one of them - sorry I can't help further, hopefully somebody else might come along and help
Guest Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 can you not get a chimney sweeps brush and push it up the chimney :-/
DOVEScot Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 Geordies right, Keep the vent off and use a small chimney brush to push it down to the vent or I would try it on a dyno rod and push the brush upwards I take it the chimney is being used as a gas flew or it sounds like it's redundant, hopefully they swept it before blocking it up Try a garden leaf blower across the vent and try and create a wind tunnel for them, worth a try :)

Guest Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 I think Geordie's idea will work with any rodding, even if you don't have a brush, just wrap an old bag around the top rod. Not keen on the blower thing tho, you have the old fireplaces opened up so you'll cause some queer mess in the house. Won't do bird much good either. When you're finished, mesh off the chimney pots to stop it happening again. Good luck on the 2nd bird.

Okitsme Posted October 15, 2007 Author Report Posted October 15, 2007 Good news guys, we managed to coax the pigeon down the chimney by shining the light up through the vent and calling for it. I stuck my hand up the vent and it basically walked onto my hand and I was able to pull it out. We could here it above our heads and it made its own way down. Thank you to everyone for their support and advice. One thing is for sure. I am not letting them out until the chimneys are capped. However long that might take. Thanks again.
Hamster Girl Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 Glad you got them out! I've been reading along silently, since I had no idea how one would get a bird out of a chimney myself.. But, I'm glad it's out alright.

Guest Posted October 16, 2007 Report Posted October 16, 2007 Yes, well done. Brilliant move with shining the light, anything will move towards 'daylight' I think. I've changed the title to: 'Bird stuck in Chimney'.
