I do not keep pigeons, I keep Chickadee and Cabin Boy who keep pigeons :'( :'( :'(

I have just started keeping rollers and hope to have a kit of about 12 so I can enjoy watching them while I am working outside my workshop:) :) :)

It looks like Cabin Boy is swaying on the idea or his racers I got him, so I might just take them over for the fun of it, but not sure yet due to the racing season being my busy time for work :-/

I keep pigeons because I love them so much, they give me pleasure watching them flying, mating, bringing up young etc. They each have their own individual characters, I could watch them for hours.Dovescot says I get too attatched too them. ;D ;D

I keep pigeons for a variety of reasons listed as follows, but not in any particular order;

1. Racing pigeons have been in my family for nearly 100 years.

2. It is something that my family enjoy and participate in together.

3. I relish the competition.

4. I love being involved with the birds.

5. I am fascinated by the breeding side of the sport.

6. I really enjoy the racing.

7. Unlike with my other passion Football, The successes and failures are in MY OWN HANDS!

8. You can make some really good friends through the game.

9. It takes up a lot of time that in my life would have me idle otherwise! (Some might say i'm idle anyway!)

10. Cos in my opinion, its the GREATEST SPORT ON THE EARTH! I LOVE IT!  ;D

I like them because there are so many different aspects to just keeping them - all of which bring their own seperate interests.

There's the simple things like sheer variety of colours and patterns which make no two birds exactly the same; its a real pleasure seeing them shine like new pins.

There's their different mannerisms and behaviours, which you have to learn cos it usually lets you know how they feel.

Breeding: choosing pairs, going to nest, laying, raising youngsters, then waening schooling & training the next generation, ever hopeful there's a nugget or two of gold there.  :)

The actual racing is not my 1st love, the season seems long on the lead up then its here and gone in a flash.

Also like doing my bit down the club, like to be part of the pigeon people crowd,  always something interesting happening there.

I enjoy seeing the differences in behaviour and mannerisms among them, you can identify with their characteristics, there are all sorts. This comes out in the racing too with birds that perform their best when conditions are right for them.

The breeding side of it is near the top of my list and is hugely enjoyable and comsuming from now until pairing up. I must go through the pairing up choices countless  times until a decision is made.

Witnessing a bird coming home from a distance - never fails to have a big effect on me - always did, always will.

Having the birds around the place is an enjoyment in itself, if coke adds life then pigeons do that plus some!

Enjoy yer doos

I started keeping pigeons by accident when pest control tried to kill them all where i used to work, took 2 squeekers home, had no idea what to do with them!!and it just went from there.Although I am really into showing now and love the challenge of good competition I still have a real soft spot for ferrals and still try and help them when I can, find that as rewarding as winning at a show,I've made alot of good friends through the pigeons too and can't ever imagine being without them.

I have many times asked myself this question, especially when things regarding the birds go against you, they are a major part of my life having been involved with them for over 50 years, and there is something new to be learned on a daily basis, almost like reading a good book you never want it to end.

Hard question to answer this one, ;D ;D ;D. still trying to figure it out, (I'm not to bright) some could say. Maybe one day I will find the answer ?, who knows  :) :) :). Novice of 51 years, most of those years spent escaping from the missis (She who must be obeyed)  ::) ::) ::) down to the loft in the back yard etc. One thing I do know, is that the younger generation of today in most cases, in the society we live, will never know what they are missing out on. Unfortunately for them.

a few year's back , my job took me to sweden  , for 7 month's , when i came back , the wife had given all the bird's name's ,sue ,molly ,george and so forth , the loft wasen't just cleaned, istill think she was going around holding a scraper under their  *expletive removed*

Think its in blood! 3rd generation to be involved.

Since been lucky enough to see that bird home on day from 500 miles been hooked will wait as many years as it takes to see it happen again ;) and again ;D To be fair 80 miles just the same ;D 1st or last :)
