DOVEScot Posted December 9, 2007 Report Posted December 9, 2007 I was always told in the past and by some fanciers yet, that from each nest you got a cock and a hen. Reading some posts it seems like I have been misinformed :-/ :-/ :-/
ALF Posted December 9, 2007 Report Posted December 9, 2007 NO DUNCAN IT CAN BE ANY VARIATION OF COCKS AND HENS
ALF Posted December 9, 2007 Report Posted December 9, 2007 AND A LOT OF IT HAS TO DO WITH THE COLOUR OF THE PARENTS
homer Posted December 9, 2007 Report Posted December 9, 2007 my experience (and my dads . .who is the main man) is that the majority of the time you get 'one of each' but every now and then you get 2 cocks or 2 hens ! its not unusual.
DOVEScot Posted December 9, 2007 Author Report Posted December 9, 2007 AND A LOT OF IT HAS TO DO WITH THE COLOUR OF THE PARENTS Well that should be easy for us they are all white :-/
ALF Posted December 9, 2007 Report Posted December 9, 2007 Well that should be easy for us they are all white :-/ WELL THATS ALL WHITE THEN!
DOVEScot Posted December 9, 2007 Author Report Posted December 9, 2007 WELL THATS ALL WHITE THEN! All white then big boy, what will be my outcome in the nests since they are all white
ALF Posted December 9, 2007 Report Posted December 9, 2007 DONT WORRY YOU'LL BE ALL WHITE ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Guest Posted December 9, 2007 Report Posted December 9, 2007 I think it is to do with averages, supposedly 50/50 of each sex, so folk naturally expect they'll get one of each in the nest. I know in the recent past I was gifted 3 nest pairs in the same year: first was a cock & hen, second was 2 hens, and the third was 2 cocks. This year had mainly cock & hen, but I had 1 nest x 2 cocks, and 2 nests x 2 hens.
Guest Posted December 9, 2007 Report Posted December 9, 2007 the theory that u get 1 of each sex in a nest is in the world of the wood pigeon(how they know is beyond me). my best m8 who flys in my club had a nest pair which turned out to be 2 cocks...in their yb year which was 06,they both topped the welsh north road fed, each time carrying 4000+ birds...these two cocks were paired together as they wouldnt do otherwise. this year they paired again...one turning out to be bird of the year...with the other close behind.(birds bred from dave stones birds) but the sex of the young depends on which type of sperm they were made from...the x and y thing. ;D ;D....paul
Guest Posted December 9, 2007 Report Posted December 9, 2007 Paul, I had a similar experience with 2 gift nest mate cocks that paired up as YBs, one took a fed position flying to the other. Thought I would get the same result this year when another pair of nest mate cocks paired, but one of them took up with an old hen [the dam] much to the annoyance of the other cock, who raced really well [to the loft anyway] and tho he was interested in the same hen, she'd have none of him.
Ronnie Posted December 9, 2007 Report Posted December 9, 2007 i bred four youngsters(two rounds) from one pair this year and all of them where cock's. all four raced out to 180 miles as youngsters and where on average my best performers and still have all four .I just gotta find the hens to pair with them now.
Guest Posted December 9, 2007 Report Posted December 9, 2007 yea this pair have won several prizes now...this their yearling year ,the 1 cock has 1st fed and 3rd fed in 3 weeks..when this cock was 3rd fed the other won the fed...so 2 1st feds and a 3rd fed in 3 weeks from this nest mates.....paul.
matt Posted December 9, 2007 Report Posted December 9, 2007 hi,i have one pair for the last 2 years have only given out cocks every nest had two chicks
Hogni Posted December 9, 2007 Report Posted December 9, 2007 One hen i´ve got has an average of 1 cock out of every 6 youngsters, doesn´t matter wich cock i pair to her, been that way for years with her. ??????

Hogni Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 Very welcome, just glad to help If you are very interrested in the subject you can try typing "pigeon sex linkage" in to google search, if you do post a link if you find something interresting
Guest Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 ;D i have found that some cocks and hens produce only cocks , other pairings only hens . even when given new partners some will produce mainly or only one sex . this coming year (all going well) i intend to pair a hen (who in the past has only produced cocks) to a cock who has only produced hens (and hens flew well as ybs) therefore new pairing hopefully will provide me with some future widowhood cocks ;D as to colour dominating for Dunc and Carol , same applies with the whites youll just have to wait & see which pairings produce mainly cocks or hens if you want to balance the sexes out in future i suggest coloured marker rings (matched) and keep a record of what each pair produces ;D ;D ;D ;D andy
