madmaxlofts Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 who beleives young birds are better iff reared on beans? ive always used a breeder mix but when i asked a few top flyers they swear by beans
p charlton Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 ive not used them and ive breed some top winners in the past
carlsberg Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 i used pea beans and tares and topped fed so you don't need special mixes its all about how you go about getting the best from your birds
Roland Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 Just a mixture of 17% to 21% protien of whatever seed etc. is ample JMO.
Merlin Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 Most birds with the exception of Widowers to-day are overfed at all times begining in the nest, our image of what a healthy fed bird should look like is far removed in most instances from what a healthy bird should be fed.truest words that apply to most working creatures, master the feeding and you are almost there/carbs/proteins/etc they are like a yo yo at different times, with the golden rule being enough should never be too much, there is never a reason for overfeeding
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 who beleives young birds are better iff reared on beans? ive always used a breeder mix but when i asked a few top flyers they swear by beans my young birds are fed on beans from they leave the nest and get nothing else till they are going to maybe the last two longer races and then they will get a little maize added and nothing else
swilcox Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 Good quality beans are great for ybs, they hold lots of water to so the birds really grow up strong. Just look at there dropping, round as a berry. Rear em on these plus mixtures are there dropping are all over the place.
Guest Paulo Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 Bamfords Breed and Wean works for me marple peas etc. Beans seem to be good as well after all protein is one of the building blocks of life. It would be stupid trying to rear youngsters on ic plus mistures when they are racing fair enough but at the beginning of their life they and their parents need plenty of food. My dad told me you can always train fat off a pigeon but its hard to put fat and make a malnuturationed pigeon strong
swilcox Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 Sorry Paulo i ment the fancy mixtures you know plus this and plus that ;D
tommy d Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 i always have a spare drinker full of beans on the loft floor, they only eat what they want, never have a crop full if there all the time
Guest Paulo Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 Sorry Paulo i ment the fancy mixtures you know plus this and plus that ;D No worries agree with you about the beans I normally buy some form the farm and mix them into the breed and wean as well. Some wag told me beans were no good for the young uns but they seem to do the trick that and plenty of red band when the parents are feeding
stevebelbin Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 I used maple peas last year and bred some beauties on them
coey Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 i buy a breeding mix from a local corn shop as i dont know anything else. could anyone tell me what i could use instead, as it sounds like these ready mixes aren't much good. cheers, anthony.
stevebelbin Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 coey, any good breeding mix will do, i just hopper feed a breeding mix + hormoform in their boxes and then give them a breeding mix twice a day. The droppings around the YBs nests are always firmer when you use maples etc
rembrant2coo Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 mine get 50% breeding mix 50% beans where do you get the beans george for by the fields
Guest Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 where do you get the beans george for by the fields cant get field beans now get them from perth
THE FIFER Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 beans always was a good feed for both old and young as the have a large percentage of water, so i would say they are good for racing, and young feeding, i use versa lager for youngster feeding but also mix in hormoform which brings your youngsters on well,
Lennut Tar Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 coey, any good breeding mix will do, i just hopper feed a breeding mix + hormoform in their boxes and then give them a breeding mix twice a day. The droppings around the YBs nests are always firmer when you use maples etc I've never fed a bean as such, to any pigeon in my life (green peas for me). The way I work, it's 40% protein for breeding, 25% protein for the moult & 15% protein for racing. But then !!!!!! Each to their own method (I prefer the "Kiss" method). Enjoy
DUBLINFLYER Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 we always used maples... gona try ur plus this an plus dat for a change, i believe dat all da well know brands i.e. versa laga etc... are sciencetificly proven to be very good for both young an old birds, it offers a more balanced diet than just protein. as u know protein slows down da circulation of da blood. which isn't 2 healthy 4 young birds.
Merlin Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 Did feed Beans many years ago,too much energy required to digest same, for birds to retain water in basket,I feed a handful of rice before basketing for race.
