DJ Posted February 16, 2008 Author Report Posted February 16, 2008 hi again im sorry if anybody finds the hawk attack video a bit much but i just couldnt believe that this happened in a busy town centre among all the shoppers :-/a local newspaper wrote an article on the attack and apparently the pigeon was struggling for a while while the shoppers just looked on? i just cant believe that nobody stepped in to try save the pigeon? debbie
REDCHEQHEN Posted February 16, 2008 Report Posted February 16, 2008 Apathy - or 'nature' as one on looker said Can't believe someone would video it - never mind do nothing

Lennut Tar Posted February 17, 2008 Report Posted February 17, 2008 hi everyone, just thought i would show you a video of a hawk attack in my local town centre which happened last week. this was witnessed by a crown of shoppers who stood near and watched the hawk attack the pigeon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AipAkPbFfBY debbie Debbie there really are some sick/weird people around etc, but that's just life in general, as we say. 'Now" I was having a very pleasant Sunday morning here, before I come on line etc. Cleaned the lofts, fed the hens fixed up the stockies so to speak, & I was in pigeon heaven you could say, watching the young cocks all enjoying themselves etc in the bath. "Guess what". Old Mrs Gosshawk :P , decided to join them in the bath (Easy feed) & all hell broke loose in the next few minutes :D because her mate also joined in too. Sorry !!!! :P I always try to see the funny side of most situations, as sad as it is at times, for our poor old pigeons etc, but I would much prefer to be that way, if one is too survive in this sport. Enjoy
DJ Posted February 17, 2008 Author Report Posted February 17, 2008 i must admit i was suprised that someone video,d the attack and i thought twice about posting it on pb but did it as hawks affect all of us fanciers, the attack in crawley happened not even a mile from my loft so its worrying 4 me :-/ time to get the eagle owl cd back out sorry to hear of lennut tars goshawk attack today it makes me wonder how bad the bop problem is gonna get b4 (and if?) anything ever gets done about it? i cant imagine what fanciers must feel like when they are repeatedly hit by hawks on a regular basis it must be soul destroying :-/ anyway now that ive depressed you all i will sign off ;D take care and good luck debbie
Guest slugmonkey Posted February 17, 2008 Report Posted February 17, 2008 I hate to say this but better he eat a commie than a racer ! I don't have the disdain for hawks that most do, they serve a purpose in nature like everything else they have their place, I don,t want them eating my birds but I do belive they have a right to exist like all other creatures, in my area they also kill mice and snakes, ( lose FAR more to snakes than hawks ) I do try to dispatch them when I catch them eating one of my pigeons but I also have a sparrow hawk that is a regular visitor to my lofts he eats starlings and sparrows that get in my lofts I like the help he gives me keeping these unwanted creatures away I don't feel as though the people who saw this did nothing wrong by not acting, we are a little biased because we like pigeons but the bird he is eating is considered feral and is viewed by most as vermin
pjc Posted February 17, 2008 Report Posted February 17, 2008 in this crazy world, if somebody had hit the hawk with a bag or thrown something at it and injured it they would probably have been prosecuted by the RSPB!
sammy Posted February 17, 2008 Report Posted February 17, 2008 in this crazy world, if somebody had hit the hawk with a bag or thrown something at it and injured it they would probably have been prosecuted by the RSPB! thats exactly what would happen ,sorry sight as it is but is it not better being a feral than a racing pigeon i see it constantly in my work and its not just hawks its seagulls and crows who mob the hawk and get the pigeon and also steal young out the nests this is nature in the raw not much we can do about it but i am of the opinion nature has its on way of working and sooner or later will hit back hard at all these predatators in some way that man wont have any control over and i mean the rspb
jimmy white Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 in this crazy world, if somebody had hit the hawk with a bag or thrown something at it and injured it they would probably have been prosecuted by the RSPB! this is pefectly true , but if somebody had missed the hawk and injured the pigeon,,,,,nothing would happen,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, this is" not" nature in the raw ,, its rspb setting up nest boxes for the perigrines in most cities now,,, not at all natural ,, it may be a feral that time , but , between that perigrine, its mate , their offspring , their off spring ,etc etc., there will be many racing pigeons killed, not by a hawk killing one ,, the rest with sheer fright will be injured badly flying into all and sundry ,, loosing all their homing faculties

Certain people in our society as such, have to try understand, that when a hawk/falcon takes a bird etc out of a flock when racing etc, they are the lucky ones so to speak. Most of the others !!!!!! live in fear much of the time & loose their racing ability as such. One could say. Because most of them, fly looking over their shoulder all the time in terror, with the thought of the "Little black Flash" ;D ;D ;D (Peregrine falcon) hitting them again & again, so to speak. So all these do gooders ???? who are breeding hawks /falcons etc for their own reasons, should look at the overall big picture & see the real damage that they are doing in my view, to all the other bird life. Enjoy.
Guest MBpigeonguy Posted February 19, 2008 Report Posted February 19, 2008 OMG do you mean snakes eat a pigeon? damn than kgod there are no snakes around here, lol well not within 3 hours, well i agree id rather see this bird eat wild pigeons, becouse then this bird will always go to this center to get more food and stay away from near by loft!
sammy Posted February 19, 2008 Report Posted February 19, 2008 its also good publicity for us as well when this happens just think on it someone sitting in the cafe having a nice meal and along comes mrs sparrow hawk tearing a pigeon to bits entrails all over the place yuk how long do you think they will put up with that
rabfefe Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 ONE OF MY NEIGHBOURS PICKT UP A PIGEON HAWK ATTACK ASSUME IT WAS MINE BUT NO I LOST TWO LAST WEEK THE BIRD WAS ONE OF MY MEMBERS ANDREW HE HAS LOST 6 TO THE BIG HEN SPARROW HAWK PLUS ONE TODAY I HAVE TOLD HIM KEEP THE BIRDS IN FOR NOW BUT HE THINKS THE BIRDS NEED TO GET OUT TO EXERCISE THIS WILL BE HIS LOSS I WILL BE KEEPING MY PIGEONS IN FOR NOW DANGER DANGER.
Roland Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 I know that it will never happen - mores the pity really I guess, But wouldn't it be just dandy for two seasons to curtail the O/B season to 6 weeks or even longer, but start from the Middle of June. Yes y/b's as norm. Will never happen, and I like most would be a bit peeved. But the hawks would go hungry at the right time with youngsters. Yes keep them in till June! Then after two seasons be danged and back to normal.

This idea was talked about alot in my area about 5 years ago and same thing,it never happened because not everyone would co operate, shame because it would have had an impact on the raptor population. It is so bad here in winter that I would say about 50% no longer let their birds fly out between about november till april
rabfefe Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 AFTER THE Y/B SEASON I KEEP MY BIRDS IN I LET THEM OUT ONCE A WEEK FOR A BATH THINKING OF TAKEN TIME OUT FOR A SEASON BECAUSE OF PROBLEMS WITH HAWK ATTACK WHAT THE HAWK DOS NOT SEE HE OR SHE WILL NOT GET > > >
