But there are new people joining this site on a regular basis, new people to the sport that need advice don't you think that people young and old would benfit from people like yourself being abit more tolerant and posting advice when it is needed.

I would if they took the advice!!!,it also doesnt help when other fanciers keep posting on that they never treat for anything when in reality they do.

Maybe Not, i apolgise for seeming rude or offencive but i believe that people should if they have the knowledge pass it on for the good of the sport, not everbody entering this site knows were to go for advice. at the end of the day we are all trying to keep the sport going. are we not.

May be you should vet who you give advice to like i said earlier novices would benfit from good sound advice like from yourself.

Wings one bit of advice is that it happens to the best however long they had birds and however much they think they know you can have the perfect breeding year the following year you do them exactly the same and it all goes wrong same as with racing and the longer you do it the more chance you have of finding out how easy it is for things to go wrong   How many of us who had birds for many years can truthfully say that things havent gone wrong despite thinking they done it right  - not many

Thanks for the advice Rose.

I think i put a reply up on a similar thread about this happining to lots of fanciers early on we put it down to the cold weather but i think as rose said one year is good and the next bad seems to be a trait this year and as i said before its not all down to fat/sick birds its going to be one of thease years i think . dont like the sound of birds falling out the sky thats some thing different (serious)

Chrissy !!!!! I would never want to upset you  :K) :K) :K) or any other of the female brigade  ;) ;) ;) (I'm not that Dum) here !!!!! (Bugger the men)  :P :P :P "But" give me a list of any desease/problem you can think off etc, I don' mind what it is, I can tell you !!!!! hand on the bible situation I have not been to a vet or pigeon supply house etc in 8 or 9 years now, to get some of the "Goodies"  ;D ;D ;D that so many are keen on. I don't even annoculate for pigeon pox here, & 90% of the flyers do, because they think it's a must do situation, "Not me", & I still fly a very competive pigeon (I'm not a champion as such) on my day. Especially at the distance, 500/600miles & they are all babies, in relative terms. Compared to most of you here.

Enjoy.

How true that is, they say they never give or treat their birds for anything and in the next breath they say we just "add a little of this or that to the water" but it is not a treatment, unless you use nothing but pure clear water 365 days a year then anything aded to water is a form of treatment in one way or another regardless of what it is .!!!

heres the important part [to me at least] how's the guys birds doing and what has caused a pigeon to drop out of the sky like that [maybe a yobbo with a airgun?]

its all down to pairing too early, too cold and rain winds etc, what other birds mate in the winter, its not natural, also it only takes second for eggs to chill if birds come off for feeding etc,

the problem seems to that all of the most recent dvds etc all state early ybs [bred in dec for the darkness system] most [if not all] new staters [thats me :D :D] will take that as gospel until time proves otherwise

Tammy 1 !!!!! Seeing as you don't believe me ?????? now. Remember what I exactly said above etc  ;) ;) ;). Because, I will tell you a little story here, just to show, how far I'm removed from modern day medication etc.

Once upon a time, their lived a pigeon fancier 50+ yrs ago, he had the odd pigeon or 2 & had the odd loft also, in his little back yard  ;D ;D ;D He had no time for eye sign as such & he couldn't be bothered cleaning out his lofts etc to much to any great extent (A recipe for disaster, many would think here) & he was not prepared to spend big money on vet's & all the modern day medication's of his day etc. He was a very smart man in his own rite, at least I think he was. He also happened to write the odd book or 2 to, no cd's but we won't worry to much about that etc. Because of his nature & a few other reasons he studied & experimented with many different goodies  ::) ::) ::) as such, & found a few, which fitted into his way of thinking, so to speak. "Now"As strange as it may seem  ;) ;) even today, my medicine cabinet ?????? is much the same as his was at the time, along with 1 or 2 other items etc.

Now !!!!! the following are what he used, if & when reqired (Much the same as myself).

1 Gentian extract (GV crystals, Terrific in wet weather).

2 Bicarbonate of soda (It's worth its weight in gold).

3 Potassium Permanganate (Condies crystals) We all know that one.

4 Hydrochloric acid (Spirits of salts) great stuff !!!!! I know all about it (Ex plumber).

5 Bleach (He used a much stronger mix, than is recommended today).

"Now" Just to show how up to date I'm, he's a couple of mine etc.

1 Lemons (I've got a tree in my back yard etc, everyone should have one).

2 Charcoal (Car'nt get much cheaper than that).

3 Garlic ($1 a jar at the supermarket).

4 Copper Sulphate

5 Vinegar (Fish & chips) None of that fancy stuff for me.

So there you have it basically !!!!! Not very exciting is it  ;D ;D ;D if you spent $30 you would get change & have enough to treat the average loft for a year etc,  easy & not much there that the vet's etc could make much money out of etc, don't you think ????.

"Finally" I nearly forgot to tell you  :D :D :D the man's name, who I thought was pretty smart in his day ??????? It was "Wendall Levi"  ::) ::) ::).

Enjoy.

Never heard of him ... but know stacks like him, and ALL seemed to have / had great success.

Like when a 8 x6 housed 10 pairs and their young - 12 pairs was regarded as a 'Mob Flyer' by plebes standards  - and flew well nigh EVERY race, - training was more than restricted, and at seasons end had to worry about the culls that hadn't earnt it's corn, let alone a perch to make room each year for the next round.

March end the norm for breeding and few batch hatches...

Been said on here a million times

1) Make sure your birds are receiving a good high protein diet with plenty of vits and minerals

2)An annual medication programme is vital

3)A hygenic loft is vital

Plenty of info in the threads, sick of wasting my breath

Glad every one of your eggs were fertile and have hatched out, does that mean I am getting an extra two young ones from you ? ;D ;D

its absoulutely heart breaking a had my birds tested while pairing up swab droppings test etc it came back slight canker but a treated em for that someone else said it could be red might but a just treated the doocote with crassote which is ment to kill em i also set off a smoke bomb which is ment to kill mites etc my problem is i think i kept my birds in over winter for the first time and it will defeitly be the last. i think the birds are unfit more than half the eggs were not fertile along with birds fighting in nest boxes its also the first time ive put nest box fronts on. more bad luck than anything. this will be only my second season racing without my dad so am still learning wont make the same mistakes again. cheers for your replys (and to chrissy hope this never happens to you)
