I am onboard a ship currently off Japan.

After a recent typhoon 6 racing pigeons and 1 wild pigeon landed onboard.

Six have since departed, leaving just one behind.

The ship will be away from land for 2 more weeks or so, any suggestions?

the birds will leave and be fine, they have just landed for a rest, believe me ,they can fly a long way so flying back to land wont be a problem.

We have been in port for a few days, the pigeon did venture off but kept coming back, I did spot a rather large bird flying round in circles (maybe a buzzard or similar) and we sailed from port yesterday.

The bird that is left has been onboard for about two weeks now, just getting concerned.

The ship is in "The Sea of Japan" east of Japan, Okinawa area.

Do not particularly want to get hold of the pigeon, as I don't want to catch a cold or the flu whatever it's called.

I assure you, this is not a wind up.

I am back on watch at midnight (ship's time = UK time + 8 hours)

I will take a photo of the bird tonight.

What should I feed him/her,? the cheesy beano we had for lunch didn't impress the bird too much.

We always have fish and chips on friday's.

Seriously, I have been giving it fresh water and the only thing it will eat is crumbled up "cracker type biscuits with vegatables in".

As you can see I have only made 4 posts (now 5) on this forum which I joined today.

Fortunately the ship I am on has a satellite internet connection.

All I am asking is guidance on what to do for the bird.

I may add a little bit of humour here and there, but the bird's welfare is the reasoning behind these posts.

Crumbled up biscuits will be fine or crumbled toast you could see if the ships cook as any rice or lentils as they would be perfect also,if you can find out the ring number it would be good as we could probable tell you where the bird is from and where it was flying to.

this could be a wind up, it might not be, taiwan is not that far [with a very strong wind up its tail]and a few landings look on the bright side this guy might have been serving on a sub!!!!,i am assuming a containership judging by the uk time bit?

Six racers landed and left, one wild one flits back and forth the ship and he thinks the pigeon is lost in the sea of japan with japan on his left hand side I am not surprised, he seems to be more lost than the pigeon ;D ;D ;D

Sorry guys,

I am an engineer, not a navigator, I meant "the sea off Japan" but I did say we are east of Japan, which we are.

Anyway, the bird has a lower light yellow ring and an upper light green ring with the following

JPN

07 HK 00583

on the green ring, both these rings are on it's right leg and those numbers are upside down, meaning the bird can read them easily when he looks down at the rings!

The last 4 digits are definitely 0583 and the digit before that is also a 0 (I think)

The left leg has what appears to be a dark green ring on it, hard to tell, it is dark out here at this moment.

That is just the thing about this ship,

We are not going anywhere, well not for the next few days anyway, we will still be in this location.

I think the pigeon thinks that we are an island!

It likes rice and mung beans, sorry no lentils onboard.

I was brought a pigeon last year which arrived in Oban on a ship. It was an irish bird that landed on the ship in the irish sea after flying th chanel. It stayed aboard for a couple of days till the ship docked. It happens more often than you might think as the quarry where the ship was going have had a few over the years.
