Germany: Duck positive for H5N1 bird flu// 10 Oct 2008

It has been reported that a duck at a farm in eastern Germany has tested positive for the H5N1 strain of bird flu.

The farm near Goerlitz on the Polish border has been sealed off, reports PR Inside.

The social affairs ministry in the eastern state of Saxony said that the farm has over 1,000 birds, including turkeys and geese.

One bird tested positive and 1434 others on the farm slaughtered as a precaution - guess that's the AI season started again then.

Going by previous years we can expect more isolated outbreaks until February / March next year.

maybe say goodbye to kassel show

Sorry don't know the geography, but the same conditions apply throughout Europe. 10km Zone around affected farm stops any movement of birds in or out Zone; Kassel itself if outside that Zone is unaffected.

kassel show will be stopped as there will be birds from all around going there, remember zones dont come into it. as the welsh show was stopped and the bird flu was in kent...but they may have different ways over there.

I've only just managed to get onto net to check out your claim.

If you try google map for the affected farm, Markersdorf, when you get that up, ask for directions to Kassel. You'll then get both locations up, with road journey mapped out for you, and a Scale on the left bottom corner. The Scale shows, as the crow flies, they are more than 200 miles [400 km] apart, so the outbreak will not affect the show, other for those caught within the 10km Zone.

And restrictions last for only 30 days, counting from 9/10/08, again, don't know date for Kassel, but distance alone precludes outright cancellation.
