Just new to the sport. And after speaking to a few lads about the cost of lofts and equipment i about hit the floor.

So i thought i would ask on the notice board......  Do you think the sport of racing pigeons, means we have to dig deeper into our pockets???

Or has the cost always be the same ????

thanks  :) :)

racing pigeons is as expensive as you make it , keep things simple , and theres plenty of bargains to be had everywhere if your prepaired to wait for them to come up

It all depends on how you go about getting set up.

Lofts, you can buy new but there are always 2nd hand available as well as the possibility of converting a garden shed etc.

Birds, you can go and spend silly money from the feather merchants or get better birds from friends and local fanciers.

Clock, again there are a lot of 2nd hand for sale but many clubs have spares to help new starters on a loan basis.

It can be as expensive as you want to make it!

As expensive as you want. I've just given a pair of babbies away that would cost best part of £100 for the pair on another site, but I let 'em go cos I felt they would never do the job I bought 'em for.

My base stock cost me bugger all, but I bought birds from 5 different national winning lofts and have none left.

One could describe our sport/hobby in many ways etc, especially to a new comer like yourself. But !!!!!!!!  :P :P :P only believe half of what you are told by the experts ???????? & then only spend half of what they say you have too (No more). Then with a bit of luck & if you have the gift  :) :) you should do alright.

Enjoy.

Agree with others, it's as expensive as you make it. You don't need a big new Petron loft, but you could buy one if you wanted.

I was fortunate in that I already had a garage doing nothing in my back garden, and recycled wood to build sections, nest boxes and perches.

I was also fortunate that people gifted me pigeons, although I did buy a few, most of them were wasted money.

Don't have the figures for that very first year, for 2002 I spent £246 for the whole year which included feeding, rings, vaccine and a few bits & pieces for the new loft. A fiver a week will get you 20 fags or 2 pints now. Cut down, makes you healthier.  :)

probably the main things we need in racing pigeons ,,,are things that money cant buy,, knowledge on pigeons [its actualy fun , learning,,,,and that never ever stops ;D] methods of pigeon racing, systems, learning about your own birds , in fact all you can on learn on pigeons , can be obtained ,all free , if keen enough,,,

, as far as the dipping in to your pocket [or what you can afford] all depends on yourself ,,some fanciers have paid thousands for pigeons , equipment etc,,, but if your shrewd enough, all this can be aquired quite cheaply,, loft is the first thing ,,look in the yellow sales paper ,or on pb. anywhere ," garage free for the uplifting" with a little work done , a great loft can be converted from the likes of this ,, most clubs are  now getting lottery grants for clocks etc supplied ,, any decent member would soon find you a clock , even free , pigeons can be aquired very easily in fact , but maybe patience is the game here , as good well bred pigeons are needed, but theres many good racing fanciers would give you late breds actually bred from  winners absolutely free, [with patience could breed a fantastic team of birds], as the old sunday school chorus used to go, "the wise man built his house upon the rock" this is true,, by befriending the real fanciers , not the ones winning races in the pub, more pints the more races theve won ;D  fees can be expensive in some clubs ,, but over the course of a year its not too bad per week , birdage can be dear,,that can be cut by sending less, but better quality ,,[it only takes one to win a race :)] beleive me ive prooved that ;D,, also, less birds [more quality]=less feeding and possibly more winning ,,, pools themselves are optional,, so the answer to your question is ;D  if your shrewd enough,, keen enough,, all can be done quite cheaply , against any other hobby  :)  yes ill give you a pair of free yb,s next year ,,for racing ;D ;D ;D   joking ,,but true  :) ;D  good luck :)

The main part is a 'Dry Loft'! Freshy air in costant supply and good feed.

The birds first need then is the feeling of their  'Home' being safe!

Then it's contentment of the birds.

Need to set you're stool out as to a 'Regular' system that suits you.

Remember not every bird will like your set up. Don't change anything for them.... only for you. Ones that don't take will fly off the top, or home late regularly regardless of you altering oat 'Mid season'.

Reducing a perch / Nest box is far better than adding one.

Most alterations best done at end of close season.

Pigeons form and like, repsond to Habits.

That is the simple basics.

Alter them as much as you like, when chage them! Not a rocket scientist mentality needed. AT the best place to observe is when out, on the roof tops.

Many spout never to allow them to do that ... Well you must instill a habit first off if any hope of doing that. Next best times are Early morn, dropping under their perch. And just before day's end under their perrch. They should be different.

Tempretures, feed change droppings.

Good luck.

Its a vey dear sport. But so are all hobbies. Take going to the football a season ticket costs a forture then theres a pie, beer, programme etc to pay for.

Fishing can be very dear as well

Very true... So go to the local games eh.

But as for fishing, again mate next door spends over a £100 a throw to match - fish one day!

Me, an ole wheel and a 8 foot cane. A few worms / spiders or a mouse if hungry.

Costs, next to nowt. Catch! Every bit as good... But miss a few bites.

Pigeons conditioned same chance if manager is good enough!

what I like about pigeons is its dear but you can go down to the loft anytime to relax from the pressures of modern life and its such a buzz when a small team man slaps down one of these big name big team business men like flyers bit like the 300 spartans at the hot gates deflying the odds proper rocky balboa moment
