tameing pigeons

im well known for having tame pigeons , my best race hen ( peanut) would jump onto me any time i got near her.

even eat corn off my  lips....i have 6-7 birds doing this,even youngbirds this year .

but i will have 12-15 come round me for food.

i never start these as young uns but they will learn it as racebirds.

ive found best way is to sit down when they feed and put feed on your lap.

let them get used to you with their food.

if you have boxes in your young bird lofts then going in at night and playing with them soon gets them tame

yes they do learn through food games, I have a bird that knows where I keep peanuts, (always have a few in my pocket) he lands on me then slides down my arm and sticks his head in my pocket, ;D ;D

Does it depend on the type of bird though?   I can call my fantails from flying onto my arm but, my Logans are different altogether - the further away I am, the happier they are!! No amount of food training seems to make them any tamer. :-/ :-/

tameness does seem to be bred into them, my tamest birds here there young arte just the same

No it doesn't seem to matter what type of bird it is as we have logans too and Bussaerts and some of them are very tame also, ( not all of them though). If I go in the loft they don't bother and they are around my feet, it's very hard to scrape as they don't get out the way, but when Dovescot goes in it's mayhem they don't get in his way. ;D

It must be me that the Logan's don't like then!  It's not for want of trying - I have spent hours getting them to feed from my hand but, it hasn't made them tamer, just hungrier, some would rather do without food than come close to me!!

Yes knew a great local fancier called John pepper, he sat aside the open door on race days, and they land aside of him. He just gentlely reached over and take the rubbers off in the door way. Truth that!

Mind loverly photo's them. Shows patience and slow movements around the birds.

The only thing my ex was good for was calling the birds in. One 'Come on my babies' even when they were circling and they'd hit the traps like the clappers and go in.
