Some areas of Germany have had lots of pigeon losses due to peregrine falcon attacks, especially in the Black Forest region. A number of fanciers in that area spray a red die for marking livestock on the underside of the birds' wings with excellent results. One fancier who lost only 1 bird all of last year to a falcon describes how the falcon attacks and then turns off just before it would hit the bird. He even promised that he will record this in a video.

Let's hope that this materializes.

Let's hope so too!

Thought so when i see your post first off... then thought 'Hey hang on a minute, the hawk(s) Peregines hit down ward and then come upwards, so that may well be why they attack and leave off at the last split second. They don't actually hit  why on the downwards swoop, but swoop up a mite! Am I correct? Think so.

i think you could well be right roland ,,after what i wittnessed the other week , they were actually grabbing the underside of the pigeon,, so, who knows,, maybe just something in this,,,,anything is worth a try,, [just means a lot of red cheqs going mext year ;D]

i remember in the early 90`s bhw use to have a wing stamp advertised like a bullseye that use to be stamped on the pigeons wings as a deterant against attacks as from above it looked like a big pair of eyes looking back at the hawk hence the pigeon looked to big to attack . as for the marker a friend of mine use to spray a bit of stock marker spray on the wings to do the same sort of thing .

yes cowman,, these were used for a while [still are for sale] but unfortunately didnt have the desired effect,, the same was the glitter,, a bit of glue with ,,glitter on , again never had the desired effect , same as the owls from the garden centres etc , i found these worked to a certain extent with sparrow hawks ,, but they very soon got wise to these ,, tammy on the forum , had the tape of an eagle owl,[the perigrines enemy]  i have never tried this [but seemed sence ],,,,one of these days , someone will think of something [[dont answer that ;D ;D]  to bring the hawk problem to a head ,, but the perigrine and sparrow hawks are so abundant now, that the pigeons must "race the gauntlet" to arrive home,,,,,and getting worse each year , so who knows,, the red dye might actually work ,certainly no harm in trying it :)

hopefully this new idea with the red dye may help :-/  ive tried all the usual things like hanging cd,s, plastic owls, and playing the eagle owl tape b4 letting my birds out  the eagle owl cd seems to work for me as whenever i play it i never have any hawk attacks that day  :) but i havnt played it for a while as the attacks died down only for me to look out of my kitchen window last week  and see a sparrowhawk sitting on my garden fence looking in at my birds that were luckily locked in the loft >:( my next door neighbour has a bird table that is only about 2 ft away from my loft on the other side of our dividing fence and she constantly keeps it topped up with bird food so the hawk probably thought all his xmas,s had come at once   by the time i had got out to the garden the hawk had dissapeared but going by the noises all the sparrows, blackbirds etc were making he obviously hadnt gone far  sparrowhawks sightings have become far more common in my area (crawley, sussex) over the last year or so with them now taking street pigeons in front of shoppers in our town centre, needless to say my birds havnt been out for excercise for a while but when they do i will be playing my eagle cd at full blast for at least an hour b4 they are allowed out of the loft   debbie

As a boy i can remember my father painting his birmingham rollers under side (wing, body, everything) with waterd down cake colouring dye (to make them look nice when rolling) and he had less hawk attacks, than in the off season.

i know of an idea that if you have a glass aivery pannel and the poor sparowhawk hits it while making its attack , it usually breaks its poor neck , so dont try that please

also , remember the "mist netters" , the RSPB used to , and still does use mist nets to trap birds for counting , i hope no one is careless enough to leave it near to their lofts on the sparowhawks regular flight path , it might accidently catch a hawk then you would have to release it unharmed

this works its no joke ive seen it on a top fanciers birds and the results are amazing.dont nock it till you try it.

that is true , under the wildlife and countryside act the law is this stupid , if you rape kill or rob , the law must prove you guilty , under the wildlife and countryside act YOU MUST PROVE YOUR INNOCENCE , so dont mention shooting , it is an offence

i was told to get a large firework rocket. as soon as the hawk/perigan appears set off rocket. This works! because as soon as you get rocket from shed f*****G things gone.so you only need one rocket .lol(shrug)

There's been quite a lot of documentaries on this phenomenon.

Its a well known defence system that smaller insects like birds and butterflies have developed to prevent themselves from being prey, same with certain species of fish and animals.  The red circles present themselves to the predictor (the Hawk) as large eyes, its believed (or so David Attenborough explained) mimic that of a much larger animal which then puts off the attacker.

you can use water based paints like the ones used in childrens schools to paint on to the top and bottom of the wings and it washes off with a sponge doing no damage to the flights.  Use it through training and your guaranteed to minimize the level of attack.  The brighter the colours of the eyes painted on the wings the more effective the system is.

I read an article "pigeon comunity" and there was a servey done by so call'd "do gooders" about fanciers blaming hawk's for all our bird losses. The survey turned out only 14% of pigeons gets killed by hawks!!!!!

I would like to meet this chap that done the servey, nobody interviewd me or any members of my club,so when and were was this servey done??????
