LnK Posted February 1, 2009 Report Posted February 1, 2009 I know one or two things about hawks as I flew them for quite a while. The hawk will keep coming back as long as you have pigeons. Easy pickings with a worst case scenario resulting in your birds finding somewhere else to live I know someone who used to keep a canary behind a plate of of glass in the avairy of his pigeon loft. Sparrowhawks can't see the glass, they would come screaming in at some serious pace and brain themselves when they hit the glass pane. He used to have a tub of water under the glass pane which teh hawk would fall into and the problem was solved. Now I don't know what the legal side of this is so I would encourage you to investigate to be on the safe side as I don't want you to break the law but the method does work.

I can't imagine their being a law against keeping a small bird behind a piece of glass in your loft aslong as the small bird was kept healthy & as far as I know you can sit water anywhere in your garden......should any hawk be unfortunate enough to ht the glass & drown in the water I would say awww thats unlucky for it but lucky for the small bird the glass was there ;D ;D ;D
Blue Chequer Pied Posted February 1, 2009 Report Posted February 1, 2009 If you are going to take a snap-shot of the culprit stake the carcass to the ground so that when it returns it cannot lift it and take it away. That way you will get time for it to pose for the camera as it will start to strip it where it is. Paul.
Guest Denny Posted February 1, 2009 Report Posted February 1, 2009 Hi, I know I maybe a newbie, but when I was getting unwanted visitors (buzzard and squirrels) what I did was download some sounds from the internet and put them on a cd and repeated pasting the calls again and again on the CD, then what I did was put the cd player in the garden shed and pressed play then replay so the cd palyed over and over. I did this during daylight hours for about a week to 10 days at first then every couple of weeks for a day or so. Hey presto - no more problems I don't no how it worked but it did. I did not get any unwanted visitors all summer last year . Will try it again this summer if needs be

Guest asha Posted February 1, 2009 Report Posted February 1, 2009 Hi Jock3,for a start, keep them in and let her find another fancier to terrorise, now after 7-10 days you need to get a system you must work until see starts laying her eggs 2nd 3rd week of april, you will have no problems after, until sept time. If you want a system to beat the hawk pm me,
Guest Denny Posted February 1, 2009 Report Posted February 1, 2009 hi denny when u say that u downloaded sounds from the internet what sounds did u mean exactly? :-/ debbie What I did was I found some call sounds of the buzzards and squirrels (the squirrel one was the best as I found one that was actually a squirrel defending its territory) I went onto various bird sites to find the calls and loaded these on to my laptop. Then I did a mix and match at first on my laptop and played it at first when the buzzard/squirrels was/were in my garden just to see what effect it would have when I played it . As soon as the squirrels heard my laptop barking the sound of a squirrel protecting its territory I had to laugh as they left with such a speed. I repeated this each time the squirrels came into my garden that day. It worked each time. The bird took a little while longer to get the message about a week or more, so between the bird and squirrels I decided to make up a cd and leave it playing in the shed. Anything was worth a try I thought, easy come easy go - no real financial implications for me to try it out other than just an hour or so of my time trawling the internet for bird calls etc.
pigeonscout Posted February 1, 2009 Report Posted February 1, 2009 I had a small aviary 3ft x 3ft made from piano wire so I could see my birds better when they were in it. I use to hate when my birds got killed and then seeing the rats come out to eat them. I could not stop the hawk but I was able to kill the rats with rat poison or placing the dead bird beside a rat trap like this one covered over with grass. http://www.solwayfeeders.com/productsdetail1.asp?STOCK_CODE=1905.
