at least 5 mile fist time dont start to close only wrecks there heads as they wont know what too do if there out of the basket and home move to 10 keep there there until they don't circle usually 3 tosses then i move mine to 22 mile or so and they might get a training toss from 50 mile they might i really don't think there any need to train them further than 20 odd mile allways when training i find for best results release from the same place every time

this is roughlly what i find works best

This Y/B  training is down to the fancier, and resources at his disposal, time, transport, etc, mine start at eight mile, till they are clearing right away then on to approx 20/25 mile,a safe lib spot,as late in evening as possible, on their line of flight, giving them time to get straight home, late evenings they wont hang about,at least four times per week, and when they are bombing out of this distance with regularity, even in relative poor conditions, you are thereby teaching them the rudiments, that's hopefully imprinted on them for the rest of their racing careers, liberated, get home as quickly as possible.

I never send old birds training with youngsters, they have to find their own way home. one thing i do with the youngbirds is basket train them ie put them in a basket  not overcrouded and leave them there for about an hour then take them arround to a nearby field and let them go. its not the distance you want its to make the youngsters confident when they leave the basket. i do this 3 or 4 times then straight into 20 miles, they would have to have been ranging at least an hour for a week or two before doing this. if you go to short you will loose more youngsters that way. A friend of mine who wins as many races as anyone in Scotland always sends old birds with them.

Not only does he send old birds but they are top racers which have remained in training so they are fit.

This is to teach the youngsters to come straight home on the preferred line and to trap immediately on arrival.

1st 3-4 toses i take 5-6 oldbirds to make them break for home sooner,in my own opinion .

after  them few short toses maybe 9mls,they go to 15mls...then after that its 20mls all the time.

i do alternate lib sites so it makes them work to find their way home.
