Hi frank,Before you even think about deep litter, you got to be 100% sure you loft is bone dry, otherwise you may go into your loft 1 humid morning and think your in a horror film

John McLaren was the master of deep litter, even when he moved ,he used to bag it up and put it in the new loft.

he put 1"of woodshaving down 1st then ,sharp sand, like holm, not any pit sand ,to claggy(impure),and from time to time sprinkle lime over, try not to play about with it just take big lumps out under prches ect. It taks a fair while to build up,but any damp, even from your shoes and your in trouble.

scrape the loft ,boxes and main part of floor ,, but when breeding used  easy bed with loft treatment mixed in it,   , under the boxes ,,also lightly spray the loft with virkon s , easier with my dis-ablement ,,

but just found out  the local  supplier of easy bed [scotts -gorebridge] have closed down, after being in bussiness for many years ,,, due to this recession ,, feel sorry for the workers  :( so itll be kneepads on,  and scrape :)

their own droppings, so long as you keep em dry.

Have you tried one of those long handled scrapers Jimmy? I got 1 a few months ago and can do the whole loft in about 5 mins standing up and not bending down and scraping away, probably the best thing ive bought.  ;)

hemp core,  or turn the droppings over with a sprinkle of lime to stop it sticking back to the floor  :)

if your going to the trouble of turning them over your aswell to scrape them out  :P

yes, josh i have one :),, scrapes the floor in no time  :),, nest boxes easy done with ordinary scraper,, :)  its just the bit under the boxes [lowest boxes about 3ft above floor] i might  box this part off for easier scraping ..., but with the easybed in this part, its  handy for any young birds , that come out the boxes [ i actualy put them there b4 weaning, and find [, as long as no bird has nested on the floor ] that most of the cocks will feed these [then they all huddle together in the corner :)],, and the pairs lay again with less bother ,, they tend to be cleaner ,  eat quicker , seeing oldbirds eat,,ready to be seperated :),, but the big scraper is great , cleans the floor in no time with no bending :)
