Beanz Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 Have the RPRA accepted GPS now as some members of my club have been mapped using it and I am sure the RPRA still do not accept this way of mapping Paul
Beanz Posted March 4, 2009 Author Report Posted March 4, 2009 Sorted spoke to Region Secretary, no change not accepted must be done by ordnance survey map. Paul
Roland Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 That is ridiculous... Gosh keeping us back there I'm afraid. The days when they had to be a bit out are gone... Was for anti terroists and the threats of bombs etc. Gosh they have een capable of precision now for umpteen years. Time to wake up to the times I guess. Just look at Google earth and punch in you're cordinates... many are far far out! Leave mine as they are... Have 10 miles advantage lol ;) ;D ;D ;D No more that what is needed lol. ;D ;D
OLDYELLOW Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 Have the RPRA accepted GPS now as some members of my club have been mapped using it and I am sure the RPRA still do not accept this way of mapping Paul well if they have used this method then there measurements are questionable as have been done differently to everyone else so would make any race they won void if there measurement was to be verified
OLDYELLOW Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 i brought up gps many years ago as they use them on boats and they seem unwilling to move with the times and say gps is not acurate enough , as Roland rightly says we have progressed along since then even have goole earth with our back garden in the satalite image if we have this technology surely we should be using it but i think the work in doing all the recaculations would be frightening i supppose they could do individual feds at a time then national clubs but they wont
Beanz Posted March 4, 2009 Author Report Posted March 4, 2009 Region secretary states that it will come but it will take time and have to be worked out how everybody can be done, will have to be controlled so all use the same distances, the fanciers in our club will now be remapped. Paul

Paul thats progress from last time i asked via a letter to the editor of the BHW was many years ago but i cant see them doing it any day soon unless fanciers put it to there region i wonder how much this would move the golden miles in feds ?
OLDYELLOW Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 even the Irish are well ahead of us then about time the R.P.R.A moved with the times
Guest spin cycle Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 friend brought his 'garmin' round and it was pretty close (30m). i reckon its getting close enough to use as 1mm out on a map (1/25k) can be 25 m.
Beanz Posted March 4, 2009 Author Report Posted March 4, 2009 Nobody actually put a proposition in to change it.
Pompey Mick Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 I compared my loft location to a SatNav one, Google Earth, and Windows Live Maps. All the Electronic ones were similar, the RPRA map one didn't match any of them. It put my loft about 200yds SE of its Google position. I tried it with another members loft with similar results. If we did go to GPS mapping then everyone would need to done over one close season, a tremendous workload similar to when the calculation method was changed. We couldn't have either/or, it would have to be all GPS or all mapping. No picking and choosing.
