Guest strapper Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 reading somewhere about ybs dying on black nest felts ive been using them for a few years now and never had any probs surely it must be something other the felts leave them where they are!. too many have reported this, many believe toxic fumes come from them when droppings come into contact with them. i think the ones from china are the ones to watch out for
slinky slitheroe Posted March 12, 2009 Author Report Posted March 12, 2009 Where are you buying yourd from Slinky? call me a tight arsed scot but ive had them afew years and after every season iput them in the washing machine and they come out superb Ive got some new ones from boddy + ridewood not tried them yet
Guest Freebird Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 call me a tight arsed scot but ive had them afew years and after every season iput them in the washing machine and they come out superb Ive got some new ones from boddy + ridewood not tried them yet Nowt wrong with re-cycling mate and they are probably better for the birds now with all that fabric conditioner fluffing them up(bunny) best to wash the new ones before use I think just to be on the safe side.

Guest Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 LAND OF LEATHER are geting sued for very much the same thing.
just ask me Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 i would stay on side of caution mate at the end of the day if u don't use them what u have to lose by not useing them
Guest Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 Reason i ask is at the shows i sell the Prona-fit ones. These are as far as we are aware not the ones causing the problems, the ones where the problem arise are imitations made in China and apparently contain an ingredient called fluroxidine or something like that. I hope this is the case anyway as this year at the show i explained this to several new people trying them out and personally guaranteed these felts as i use them and am doing this year. Many many people who purchased this year were repeat customers who couldnt be bothered to stick them in the washing machine and all said they were more than happy with them. you aint far wrong chris, but no stamp on them with made in china.
thunderboult Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 i was 1 felt short last year, when i went to buy more they had them black ones, i bought a pack and used just the 1 for the pair that was short. i heared a few rumors about them but thought it was nothing, the yb's hatched out ok but both dead within 2/3 days, no other problems with any of the other birds, i took that felt out straight away and give them a cardboard bowl and tobacco stalks for the next nest and no problems, so i think it was those felts.

Guest IB Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 I've been using the same ones for years, washing & disinfecting them at season's end. If I remember right they were made by Thibo and advertised as latex-bound, able to be dipped, breather holes and don't unravel like brown horsehair ones did. Got mine from B&R but looking on their website last weekend for re-order, they don't seem to be selling them anymore. So back to disposable, as they don't seem to last more than one season?

Guest youngzimmy Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 stick to the brown nest felts i think afterall they are cheap enough no probs involved
Brian Smith Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 Pigeon men are a law unto themselves we moan about the price of corn subs birdage cost and most other things we have to fork out for, then they go out and buy nest felts: whats up with straw and and let them get on with it without any risk of young birds dying.
Guest IB Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 stick to the brown nest felts i think afterall they are cheap enough no probs involved Well there is/was a problem with them; they unravel / the OBs pick them out and youngsters toes can become entwined. That was my main reason for changing over to latex - they stay solid. I've had no problems with them.
Pego Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 reading somewhere about ybs dying on black nest felts ive been using them for a few years now and never had any probs surely it must be something other than the felts Will never use them again. Had used them for a couple of years with no problems and bought another batch from B&R last year at Blackpool. These were used in my racing loft last season were we lost 30 plus ybs in the nest 1-3 days old. At the same time in our stock loft we used black felts i had left over from a batch i bought in Belgium the previous year with no problems at all. After much head scratching/hair pulling/dropping & swab checks i phoned B&R and was told i wasn't alone and it seems to be a bad batch of felts. Have since heard it seems ybs suffocated as their was a problem with the latex in them.
Guest youngzimmy Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 people see somthing different and have to have it problem arrives oops go back to the tried and tested that works i use brown nest felts and tobacco stalks instead of straw no problems i know a lot of people use straw put it in a bag with disinfectant powder shake it about a bit and use that but you dont have to go threw all that with tobacco stalks and you can feel safe there are no paracites around so forget the black nest felts heard many bad reports on them
Guest youngzimmy Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 i give up it is like some sort of figgin moaning club you will be wanting iderdown downies for them next go along to your nearest railway bridge and find out what the wild pigeons use maybe you will finaly learn something whatever any one has to say trying to help some bampot comes along oh what about this what about that get a life its only pigeons for god sake
