Guest the gers Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 Hi This year in the young birds i had a hen that should have won 3 1st in the club. But could not get them to trap. Any ideas on how tho stop this happen again.
just ask me Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 its all about geting them in as soon as they stop flyng or when there back from a toss never leave them sit out for any lenght of time and maybe try feeding them a few hours eariller before u send them to a race
Guest the gers Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 They never were allowed on the house roof. any time they came back from a toos she was the 1st pigeon in.
Delboy Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 Maybe in their genes m8. My strain of pigeons are terrible for flying round and wasting time on return from a race.If I lose 2 minutes,( with ybs ) then I feel I have had a good trap. Some say distance birds arent the best trappers :-/
Guest shadow Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 if you have bad trappers nine times out of ten it is down to the fancier and the way he has trained them as young birds
pjc Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 you mst be doing something different on race day to training days!
Delboy Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 if you have bad trappers nine times out of ten it is down to the fancier and the way he has trained them as young birds I know what you mean but if I gave you a pair of these ybs then you would see what I mean. By the way, I have won yb averages for many years against good competition and I am one of the most successful yb fliers in my area, however, I have kept pigeons for 36 years and the strain of birds ive got now are the worst trappers I ve ever seen. They get better as yearlings.
Guest the gers Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 Ever thing is done the same on the race day. i wear a blue lofted coat at all time. and do the same things. none of the other pigeon sit out.
Taylorsloft Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 i use a referee whistle when i feed them they trap like bats out of hell .but sometimes do get a bad trap but thats life :)
the pigeon_milker Posted September 26, 2008 Report Posted September 26, 2008 if one of are don't come in strait away it get locked out for the night they soon learn or get eaten by the many cat or hawks lol
grizzal Posted September 26, 2008 Report Posted September 26, 2008 we have some old hens out, keep them abit hungry so hopefully the youngsters see them and follow them through the doors :)
OLDYELLOW Posted September 26, 2008 Report Posted September 26, 2008 if you want your birds to trap quicker , then give them something to trap for and the best motivation i have found comes down to one seed and thats dari either red or white ( also called milo ) the folowing mix is a seed mix i have been using for years and it works and i have passed it on to a few people on here that have had bad trapping with great results , buy equal quantitys of the following Linseed , black rapeseed , hemp , canary seed , and dari use this mix during the racing season as a traping mix , out of season if flying birds out just used the dari , the dari tastes like sugar to the pigeons and they go mental for it , this will improve your trapping. With Mark Proctors permision i will copy his ims or he can tell you that it actualy does work.
cheeseman Posted September 26, 2008 Report Posted September 26, 2008 nobody has said if they use sputnics or open doors i prefer to use the open door but i also have a sputnik if the majority of the birds have gone through the door then it is shut and the sputnik opened when i feed the ybs the ones outside soon get the idea and come in via sputnik they then get used to both.
OLDYELLOW Posted September 26, 2008 Report Posted September 26, 2008 nobody has said if they use sputnics or open doors i prefer to use the open door but i also have a sputnik if the majority of the birds have gone through the door then it is shut and the sputnik opened when i feed the ybs the ones outside soon get the idea and come in via sputnik they then get used to both. better to use one method of trapping as then the birds feel safer and dont mess around , if they dont trap then its because of the confusion on how they enter , i used to use open door for old birds but with the ets most will be moving to traps
mark proctor Posted September 26, 2008 Report Posted September 26, 2008 yes thanks to old yellow ..he got my young birds trapping within a couple of days..they love the seed more than they do peanuts...i think there addicted to it now..plus it conditions them loverly....so thanks again oldyellow (mark) for your advice...your a gent mate..... ;) ;) ;)
Wiley Posted September 26, 2008 Report Posted September 26, 2008 trapping is a fine art, and you need to fine tune it to your birds every year, as young birds and as old birds, it takes a matter of 3 days, ive wrote about it before on the website somewhere and of sometime ago its a procedure i have done for the last 2-3 seasons and hardly if ever get a bad trap, its starts on the first training toss, if those birds dont trap straight from the sky, the ones that do will be given half a mixture the ones that don't trap recieve nothing, the 2nd toss and 2nd day the ones that didnt trap from the air the previous day some will today, however if they dont can guareentee they will the third day, but the idea is to give them a treat after they have trapped well, like a peanut or such, as then they associate trapping with a treat, its like any animal to teach them tricks it must be with food, and once they have gained this trick, they can be fed as normal, however they must perform how you want them to(i.e trapping) if they dont no treat if you catch my drift
mark proctor Posted September 26, 2008 Report Posted September 26, 2008 yes willy spot on m8..ive think when i first joind this site you gave me some good advice...all the advice is very helpfull and most of it i keep stored on my fav,s...like willy said a treat every time they come in...i use to put 2 peanuts in each box when i let my old birds out...morn and night,,,, they used to trap like rockets ...but in the end i had a few wise cocks that went strait into other boxes first ..ate theres then back in there own box...lol...so had to use a bit of red band so it give all the other cocks time to get in and fight for it..... ;)
