I need help.... Most of my birds have young in the nest ranging from 5 - 15 days old. I am feeding them a breeding mixture and also giving plenty minerals and grit and clean water. But when I feed them they are just nibbling away at the food/grit and it seems they are looking for something else. Is there something they need that I am not supplying. If I leave my section door open they're straight into corridor looking about like there's something there after. Any Ideas??

a good breeding mix i always beef up a bit with maples, so there are less small grains for them to pick about for.

pigeons seem to have bigger cravings when rearing young, grit n minerals ye fine but i find the crumble blocks and matrix always seems to leave my birds more content.

on the odd occasion i have sometimes put some garden earth in a pot and place in loft (mainly stock loft as they are prisoners), and remove the same day once they have had a nibble.

wot breeding mix u using? i've found start plus to be one the best in recent years.

Clay blocks will be of a good help to the birds. Be prepared for them to eat a heck of a lot of it. Another thing that will help your birds is the soil from mole heaps. If you decide to use it, make sure that it has not been soiled by a dog or cat. Mixed grit should br changed every day, without fail. I use vitaminised minerals which I ration on the basis of giving them what they need for the day. This way I don't wast it and I can give them fresh every day. Your loft may be smelling badly and if you take the above steps it should improve matters, given a little time. I hope that helps.

Thats another thing of concern. Not fully happy with the oldest set of young birds. Am very in-experienced with breeding young as this is only my second season breeding birds. Had no probs last year but new loft and more birds seems to have brought a problem

i think its natural, and quite common  for pigeons  to crave for various minerals/grits /pickstone,,yet still look like their after something, :-/,when feeding big youngsters ,,, you can only supply them, with as much variation in different grits /minerals /pickstones,as you can get,,,, a  high  protein diet often helps at this time,,

Buy an iceberg lettuce every day when your ybs have turned 7 days old. Sprinkle it with salt (not too heavy) and spread it out four times a day. This will solve your problem.
