In reality you need to think of what homing is, is homing racing, no. The old english type pigeon no matter where you sent it you would always get them home, people would reed youngsters of 20 and end the season of 20, the english type pigeon was typical homers and had strong homing aility. However the foreign strains, would often lose themselves and were never to seen again however there speed was more heightened, ut reeding 20 youngsters from the foriegn strain and keeping 20 was very few and far etween, as the skill of finding there way home in my view has decreased. Consequently look at the velocitites over the years, as well as the losses  :)

hi wiley, do you think the feeding may have something to do it, tradionally people fed a heavier mix in those days so birds would be carring more body(making them slower) but if they made a mistake they still had plenty in reserve to get home, were as today's diets are very light and the birds are not carring the body weight as birds of yesteryear used to and if  something goes wrong there's no reserves in the tank, hence the birds go down.

hi thunder,

its a good point that you are making, however, there are still fanciers i know of the old skool that still feed a full pea and  bean mixture, are there losses the same as yester year, unfortuantly not the losses have increased. However would e interesting to find out other peoples findings and feeding methods, regarding losses :)

Feeding for the distance eh, may well be a reason birds never arrive home... or until that have been sorting themselves out to make it home. Sure pointer that should peeve some off is the condition that they acyually get home in!

Too many brag how it looked times better than went sent  :-/ :-/ :-/

Most should and will look back to normal a week later if in proper condition when sent.

Another reason why the 'Lame Crutch' of so many are used. Not enough look at themselves, nor the birds that they have 'Bolstered up' their lofts with. I might add also, in my oppinion too many are quite happy for a 'Paper bag' to win.

Fine says I if they are still winning a little further down the road, or a litle harder.

As I posted on another topic, this shows the way a 'Fancier' should be.

The best Fed flyer In our Fed, and probably the Agmal, replenishes his' Bussearts regularly, about 3 years or so. Last two seasons, and he flies every race, and is without the top Distance man, he actually gives some back to the fellow he buys them off. He keeps 12 pairs now, a 'Mobb  Flyer' in his eyes. All have to earn their corn, then their perch. YET Still has too many nigh every season.

Adds in for the cross.... no inbreeding allowed here either.

Untill recently, about 4 years ago he only ever housed 12 pairs. All had to fight for a place.
