thunderboult Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 is the head gasket a big job????? it's not a cheap option, let's hope it's just a pipe leaking.
pjc Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 fairly big job as often its caused by a distorted head which may also need a skim.
chris h Posted March 26, 2009 Author Report Posted March 26, 2009 it's not a cheap option, let's hope it's just a pipe leaking. which pipes could it be and what would cause an air lock
jonl6280 Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 aye and no just depends on who does it. if you get a garage then it will be slightly more pricey, and get it done as a homer then it will be cheaper, remember if it is the head gasket to get it skimmed- (resurface the head) prob cost round 300 - 400 pound mark for job
thunderboult Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 which pipes could it be and what would cause an air lock there's a couple of pipes going in to and out of the rad. have a look around the rad for any rusty looking stains and any pipes coming off the rad. or if any of the pipes are rubbing against anything.

TonyW Posted March 27, 2009 Report Posted March 27, 2009 Hi Chris does the vehicle actually over heat or does the gauge just go up then down again also how far does the gauge go up do not take to a garage and tell them you think head gasket has gone you may as well go in and say please rip me off also more than 1 way for gasket to go ie blow between water jacket/oil also w/jacket or oil way /combustion chamber if you belong to RAC or AA they or know a friendly patrol they carry h/gasket tester tests for high levels HC in cooling system they also carry cooling system testers test pressure for leak
Guest numpty01 Posted March 27, 2009 Report Posted March 27, 2009 air lock intermitant in the heater matrix is more likely the cause get someone to run pressure test on it they will do this for free in garage. and dont be fooled by radiator it could have a hot spot as we call it were by a blockage is restricking the flow of water
jonj1978 Posted March 27, 2009 Report Posted March 27, 2009 is your water pump hosing made of bakerlite plastic sometimes they crack n water leaks from there get someone to put accelerator pedal to floor while you watch for leaks... obviously not in gear lol.. jon
chris h Posted March 27, 2009 Author Report Posted March 27, 2009 theres no water leaking from anywhere apart from the top pipe going to the radiator i have sorted that now.took it for a 30 mile run and the temp gauge was up and down like a yoyo when i stopped at home i herd it bubbling up in the header tank but when i opened the header tank it was still it the right level confused :-/
weecunny Posted March 27, 2009 Report Posted March 27, 2009 well miby try a new sender unit or check the wire is not eathin if u take the wire off and put it on the block or earth ur gage should go straight up and stay aslong as u hold the wire on a earth
harky Posted March 27, 2009 Report Posted March 27, 2009 could be a llot of things , have you checked both hoses going to the radiator to see if they are both warm , if ones warm and the other cold it could be a thermostat, all the little hoses going to expansion tank and radiator blow through them and make sure there is no blockages in them , i could go on all night but try these first , its hard to pinpoint the problem when you are not standing in front of the car
