jase Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 hi guys, is it possible to have a couple of pairs of birds freeflying around the backyard ? i have been told fantails , and also modenas ? are these good breeds to try ? or can anyone tell me what other breeds would work okay ? i want to keep them in a large aviery to start with with a couple of nest boxes , once thay are use to the place , do i just let them out or what is the best way to go about it ? any help would be great , regards jase
pjc Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 fantails, tumblers, anything realy will free fly to a dovecot etc in the back yard but best to settle youngbirds to it rather than trying to break oldbirds. There are some pics on here somewhere showing nets over dovescotes to settle youngbirds when first introduced to there new home but what you do need to consider is your local hawk problem. If you have a problem in your area you are likely to lose the birds fairly quickly! Phil
Guest ljb107 Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 i would get fantails. Modena's are a bit too heavy to fly, they would just walk around.
franny41 Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 horseman pouters or any type of pouter are nice to have flying around the garden. franny.
Guest joshdonlan Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 have a look at Birmingham rollers or give me a P.M. Josh
grizzal Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 I would start with fantails ,nice to look at dont go far :)
jase Posted December 30, 2008 Author Report Posted December 30, 2008 thanks guys, so modenas cant fly at all ? there like a king pigeon ? so its between a modena or a fantail ? jase
pjc Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 modenas and kings have been developed for the table and not there flying ability! Fantails don't fly a lot but tumblers and tiplers are good flyers and facinating to watch perform in the sky.
Guest ljb107 Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 modena's are just a miniature king. I would start with fantails.
