Babybird Posted June 25, 2009 Report Posted June 25, 2009 :)I have 3 yb's and am wondering what sex they are. Someone told me recently that you can tell by the head shape but unfortunately can't remember which way round it was?????. Two of my birds have a rounded head compared with the flatter head of the other one can anyone shed some light for me?
Guest Grasshopper Lofts Posted June 25, 2009 Report Posted June 25, 2009 its just a theory not 100% percent but rounded head is a cock flat a hen

heather down Posted June 26, 2009 Report Posted June 26, 2009 I was told to look at the heads if flat it is a hen. I still find it hard but I'm getting better at it.

chickadee Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 Have a look at this http://forum.pigeonbasics.com/m-1224883485/s-0/
Guest Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 Hold the pigeon in your hand and gently squeeze the outer two toes towards the middle toe (don't use any bias). The outer toe of a cock will be slightly longer than the inner toe. On a hen they are the same length. This works in 98% of cases, but there are always exceptions to the rule.
Guest HighSpeedLofts Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 cocks will spin round to the right hens to the left and hens wil only go half way or is it the other way about cocks also only make the slapping noise with there wings when out cocks will also have black splashes on feathers but only if it has splashes lol unless its carmichael pigeons as i believe in this strain the hen also has black splashes i just use my eye the big bold ones are cocks
chickadee Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 I find there is an exception to every rule except that if it lays eggs it's a hen ;D
chickadee Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 u ll find that if the whites are some what inbred they have hen looking heads / faces u can get this with many whites as most keep them close bred I never inbreed my whites, I have been gifted some and bought a lot of good stock from a lot of sources to avoid this and i still get the same, cocky hens and henny cocks. We have had a lot of good fanciers visiting us and all have the same problem There are in the main definite cocks and definite hens but we find there is always the exception to any rule, I will definitely try some of the new ones that have been posted as I have in the past paired up two hens and got four eggs and I have a pair of cocks that are as gay as you get and are totally inseparable
chickadee Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 not had any gay cocks as yet but did get sold a pair of whites that were both cocks even after the seller did that sex thing saying it always worked , what i ve found is a lot of us that keep whites have them com ing from same lofts / flyers , jon Yes Jon is is so hard when you have whites but we made a decision early on to just get small amounts from as many fanciers as possible to avoid inbreeding and split them all the time so we have good strong stock, this year because we are racing we are going to pair winners to winners to improve our racing chances for the future, Duncan says we are not buying any more ;D
