T_T Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 Don't get me wrong, I do not like cats but I wouldn't be too keen to frighten them off altogether for obvious reasons. Keep plenty of Rat/Mouse poison down and a friendly rat hating cat. It's one solution.
Guest bigda Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 Antifreeeze is top draw. Best way is to make a paste with it and Digestive biscuits and peanut butter. Rats can also not resist fatty stuff like fried sausage, smoked fish skin or skin off boiled bacon stop! you are making my mouth water, sausages, bacon, fish teas, stop no more i am on a diet :B ??)
Guest vining45 Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 rats nearly made me give up apeice of 4 inch pipe about 18 inches long hole cut in top in middle to put bait in leave under loft with large stone or weight of some kind to stop them taking it away use block bait or whole wheat it worked for me i now keep bait under loft all the time
Guest Owen Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 I have bait boxes out and about all the time. A couple of weeks ago I found a huge rat sitting on the lawn, dieing. As others have said, I realise that, where there is one there will be more. I will continue with the bait boxes, but I will also set some fen traps, baited with chocolate and peanut butter. Unfortunately, my neighbour has a piece of ground behind my garden which is badly overgrown with weeds and where rubbish has been left about. The rats have all the cover they need to travel around.
Guest vining45 Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 try offering to clear a few yards so theres open ground i`d chop it in to small areas with fire brakes and burn it a bit at a time
hotrod Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 try chocolate they just love it ,i have found they really go mad for a lion bar ,if theres a rat about and i set my fen trap with a piece of lion bar in it ,the next morning good night irene GUARANTEED.
beechessam Posted April 13, 2009 Author Report Posted April 13, 2009 trays of water with anti freeze, bye bye rats. The trouble with antifreeze or other similar methods is that dogs also love the taste of it and within 24 your dog will have died a very slow painful death. Set a decent trap line and bait boxes, that will keep on top of rats and your dogs safe.
Skull Lofts Posted April 13, 2009 Report Posted April 13, 2009 a pest controller told me to put porridge oats mixed with cement powder it allegedly sets in there stomach you could say they end up stone dead ,havent tried it myself yet it could be an old wives tale...pete We even use this method in Sout Africa. You mix equal parts of Maize meal, Icing sugar and Cement. Skull
Roland Posted April 13, 2009 Report Posted April 13, 2009 a pest controller told me to put porridge oats mixed with cement powder it allegedly sets in there stomach you could say they end up stone dead ,havent tried it myself yet it could be an old wives tale...pete Yep, have advocated that a few times on here. Can't get immuned to that either. Worked for a Food company where rats thrived. Told the bosses how to do it as above. Twits asked rent a kill who said it was illegal and not allowed to do it. So mate did it any way, was a time when walking to the canteen - had outside walk to get there - when the women were pertrified and there were loads.... so much for rentakill. Mate put the cement down as above.... 6 Months we was privately thanked later in a much as if we had.... two faced gits, there were no rats left. And of course the Anti freeze digestive and peanut mix does great.
jimmy white Posted April 18, 2009 Report Posted April 18, 2009 where are new loft is there are a lot of rats about so what i intend to do is trap as many as i can then i getting a ferret that will live near the loft in the hope the smell will keep them away and if i can get a very small gill i send it down there holes rats will kill pigeons , usually eating the grain from their crop, once they have did this once, they will certainly do it again, their very crafty for traps , but i have found that chocolate is one of the best baits, and often gets the better of them. rats and mice are very bad for spreading paratyphoid [salmonella] ive kept ferrets for many years, very secure , from the loft, off course, but often run them under the loft and surrounds, i find this does tend to keep the problem of rats at bay, if the ferret corners a rat , it will kill it in seconds ,as shown on pic below
franny41 Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 i had them climbing onto the loft roof and coming down through a vent i had...i put avairy wire over it ,would not have believed how clever they are...they manouvered down the v perches to the floor ...skilled rodents...more like circus acts, isnt the saying ...when the bomb goes off... all there will be left on earth is cockroaches and rats! you've read a brian plummer book hav'nt yae 8) did you check to see if it was a dog rat or a doe if it was a doe she will be pregnant and looking for blood and protein to nourish her unborn young keep on top of things by getting a couple of baiting stations and keep them well stocked up also keep your fenn trap set but make sure its under a hut.cheers Franny.

cheeseman Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 i live on a farm and there are always rats about had one getting into the yb loft about a year ago it would get into the loft and kill one brd i sat in the loft every night for a week and as soon as i was gone it was back, so i set tunnel traps round the loft ,and lo and behold i caught the bigest ugliest alpha rat you,ve ever seen after that no more rats in loft the traps are left set all the time with excellant results having accounted for numerous rats stoats and weasels and a grey squirrel
Roland Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 Fortunately haven't had rats.... Mice yes.... caught one last week .... first since January. Just about every house hold has one or the other... If yoy think diffently then time to check it out big time! I rebait my traps regularly. Sure the swarm into the houses off the fields in Autumn. BUT most don't leave. So trraps etc. are on over time then. I have about 12 down most days.
