pigeonman007 Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 Hi all, Have been letting my ybs out for about a month now, all they do is fly for a couple of minutes then up on the house and just flying across the roof etc. They get a teaspoon of redband for every 2 birds early am. They get verselaga junior UK mixed with barley of an evening 70%junior, 30%barley, given an ounce per bird. They trap quick enough, perhaps I'm just impatient and they need more time before they start flying properly??
The Navigator Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 I never worry about making young birds fly. Mine always go when they are ready.
Okitsme Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 Have you tried feeding them some corn before you let them out. I found that it took away the hunger pangs and the birds flew longer. If they are hungry they know the sooner they come down the sooner they can eat. Hope this helps.

pigeonman007 Posted May 4, 2009 Author Report Posted May 4, 2009 Thank you for replies all, how much should I be giving them if ounce a day is not enough. Think I am perhaps being a bit to cautious on feeding. Had yb sickness symptoms in a couple of my older ybs and was told to cut right back on feeding to an ounce a day for ybs. Will try the idea of feeding them a little before I let them out
Tony C Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 If they clear up that oz each evening keep feeding until they start leaving the barley.
blackdog Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 sounds like there hungry mate, i give mine quarter once red band morning and as much as they can eat, high protein y/bird no maze 2.45pm after they come in,this way they grow well and exercise well.
ritchie1 Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 allways make sure your birds are geting enough a once is not enough the birds wont fly if there not geting enough give them a once and a half at least when they come in and the birds will be better off never just give them a once because its not enough for young birds there just young birds and still growing

taffacre Posted May 8, 2009 Report Posted May 8, 2009 young birds should at least get an ounce and a quarter a day, quarter in the morning and an ounce in the evening, get yourself a small BELL,everytime you are about to feed them ring the bell, they will get use to this sound and even when they are not really hungry when you ring the bell they will respond and come in.. it works everytime for me.Dont use red band myself, personally its not for me.Dontb like giving youngbirds small seeds.
chrisbonnie Posted May 12, 2009 Report Posted May 12, 2009 so an ounce and a quarter is about right for food, but try feed twice a day? i just got another 8 pigeons from louella, they`re younger by about 2 weeks than my first 2, is it ok to feed them all the 1.5oz of feed per day?
wilkins Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 i feed half oz mix in the morning then at night full hopper of maples for 20 mins , from june this hopper will be barley with a little mix fed on trapping prior to this to get them going prior to training late june
OLDYELLOW Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 i wouldnt be worried at making them fly at all if they dont know there surroundings they are easily lost

chrisbonnie Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 I hope you have kept these new birds seperate from your others! You should keep new introduction quaranteened for at least a week. only the first 2 days, diodnt know it had to be longer, whats the consequences?
pigeonpete Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 only the first 2 days, diodnt know it had to be longer, whats the consequences? if your lucky they will be o.k, but can cause bother when you fetch y.bs in from various different sources, as all birds contain different bacteria, and when in contact with another y.b can make them sick. good luck with them im sure you will be fine, but try to keep em apart for at least a week why you treat the new batch for the normal, cocci, canker, worms. all the best
