Guest Denny Posted May 31, 2009 Report Posted May 31, 2009 The reason why I ask is that I have some young birds and whilst handling them this afternoon, I noticed that a couple of them liked to be tickled just behind their head and seemed to relax a lot more and seemed mezmerised. Somewhat similar to a dog I suppose rolling over to have its tummy rubbed. Has anyone noticed this with thier birds when they handle them? Is there a soft spot on a pigeon like a dog liking its tummy, chest or ears rubbed?
jimmy white Posted May 31, 2009 Report Posted May 31, 2009 pigeons love being stimulated [or tickled , i you like ] on the hard bone under the eye, stimulating this bone can allmost hypnotize them,, this is the bone that each mate , preens or stimulates, which seems to have a real calming effect on the pigeon,, if you tickle this bone [its a kinda raggety bit] for a while, in perfect peace and quiet, with no movement around you, , you will be able to have the bird lying in the flat of your hand ,, with only one hand, , ive even [my partypeice ;D true]had the pigeon , lying on my hand, upside down whilst still tickling this bit under the eye, for over 5 mins,, try it,, it works but need no movement and perfect quietness.
just ask me Posted June 1, 2009 Report Posted June 1, 2009 very interesting jimmy must give it a go other than this playing with your pigeons will make them very tame

Thanks Jimmy, you've certainly earnt the new name of Jimmy, pigeon whisperer! It was roughly where I was stroking the bird, looking at it, it would be roughly where I think its ears would be. I was quite surprised on how it seemed to just 'relax'. I am trying to tame the birds so that they are not so spooked when I go into the loft, as a couple of them seem to shake when I first walk into the loft. I hate to think that I am frightening them and wanted them to know that I meant no harm so thought that if I found a 'soft spot' that they would relate me handling them with the feeling of relaxation.

Tony C Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 I once see something similar on TV at first the bloke said it was resting then he said it was stunned then he said it was pining for the fjords. WAKEY!!! WAKEY!!! Its not a Norwegian Blue is it by any chance ;D
goshawk Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 i know theres a way of making pigeons sleep, gun dog trainers use it, its called dizzying pigeons, basicaly you put there head underthere wing like there going to sleep then shake them gently side to side and lay them down on that wing and they will stay like that for upto 20 minutes
Peckedhen Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 Amazing that the bird will sit on your knee, unrestrained, the right way up, let alone upside-down. You really are the pigeon whisperer Jimmy. :)
Guest IB Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 Nice photos and remarkable, quite remarkable. A few of my 'spare' hens will respond to being stroked around the head & chest when sitting in their bowl, more rapture than mesmer. I've one away tonight to Newbury, so 'finger crossed' or more correctly, hand cupped.
