At our club meeting this week it was decided not to have a presentation night the £5 a head buffet was deemed to much by some ;D. My question is does your club have a social side anymore? Over the years I have seen the local members attitude change even dropping round for a cuppa seems to have gone you have to ring and make an appointment, some won't even let you near the lofts, its seems to be getting like Formula 1

Very few local clubs have social sides anymore, last year we put a buffet on for free, 7 turned up and 2 of these weren't even pigeon men, most give their prizes out at AGM. I think this is part of the friendship that has left the sport which is a shame really, to me this is what pigeons is about.

The club I fly in The Dagenham Trades Hall has a very healthy social side to it. Presentation nights we have between 100-150 attend. Birthdays a little spread at the club is put on. During the racing season Bar-B-Qs are held along with the occasional quiz night or race night. I have to say though this doesn't happen by chance, we all work very hard to keep what we have.

When I lived in Hertfordshire all the local clubs held Annual Dinner Dance and Prize Presentation Nights during the winter months. From the end of October until end of January there was never a weekend that went by without a presentation evening from one of the local clubs/Federations or the LNRC. These were fantastic social occasions and brought members and their families and friends together. They were also a great advert for our hobby and showed pigeon racing as it should be to the general public. On these occasions a local councillors was invited as guests of honour and the local press were also in attendance to report on the event. All good for public awareness of our hobby. These occasions were paid for by all members pulling together by selling 'football cards' or some other form of weekly draw, and an annual sale of pigeons was also held to help pay for these events. Sadly over the past 10 to 15 years, generally speaking, these occasions have become a thing of the past. So much for progress in today's ever increasing anti social society.

Bring back the good times, where every fancier helped each other out for the good, well-being and love of the hobby.

As has been said on many occasions, "Pigeons Racing is dying on it's feet", and sadly from within the hobby. We cannot expect support from outside the hobby if we cannot be seen to be helping ourselves from within

Good morning , i don't have a loft so i can't join a club ,but i am interested in the birds .I am reading what you are saying about the social aspect of the Sport .Could you not organise something central  in the country for everyone to come to twice a year say .I don't know how many menbers are on here and everyone seems friendly , perhaps PB could have a social function someplace bringing members from different clubs together . It is just a thought .Have a good day everyone . Avril

exellent idea aviril...meeting up of members.

on the joining a club...you could join as a non flying member, you would not have a vote on subjects but...you would be able to join in with club nights and presentations, plus other club facilities.

you do not have to have a loft to join! :)

We used to have a presentation every year, with about 150 memebers & guests. Now the cards and money are just handed out in an envelope the week after the last race.We used to have a drink and a natter after basketing, but only about 4 or 5 of us bother anymore. If some members don,t send to a race they just dont turn up to help. The future is bleak for the sport.

I'm helping to run our presentation night this year for the last couple of year's it' been a tenner a ticket this year we will be making it £12 but for that you get a 3 course meal and a live band till the back of 12 so it cant be that bad at the price surely? We had about 70-80 people at it last year but hoping for a better turn out this year but who knows?

My own clubs presentation is consisted of 3 members bringing 15 guests each = 45 of the 60 in the hall, presentation lasts for 4-5 mins which is understandable as 50 of the hall are non fanceirs, always a great night though. :) :) :) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Good Morning , George you told me i couldn't join your club !!! maybe i would be too hot to handle for it you meant !! anyway never mind , i am sure it would be a great night a function with people from PB from all over , swapping info and having a good time .We could have a discussion and see what everyone thinks and possibly someone could arrange a get together ,maybe the moderators have a committee who could see about it . I am sure there would be much support .A grand pigeon ball with everyone getting dressed up and music from scotland ireland wales and england a right mix .Just a thought . have a good day everyone . We used to have a brilliant presentation night offering a buffet, artist and disco but gradually the numbers dropped until it became an embarrassment.  Now the cards are handed out after the agm, you can't even get members to stay for a drink and a chat after marking or clocks, they all just want to disappear.  Most don't even help to load the baskets, they're off once marking's finished.

the last presentation my club had was in 2005. as half the people their where my friends .i then left the sport so the club did not have enough to have a dinner dance.so when i joined this year i asked .i was told they needed about 60 bodies to make it worth while . so i said i would take 30 tickets that went up to 40 . then i was told it was to late to get it sorted. so hear is hoping that we have one next year if push comes to shove i will organize it myself . nothing worse than winning a bit the getting your trophies and tickets handed to you in a box. hope it comes of as i remember back to 2005 and poppin bottles of champagne at 2 o'clock in the morning .the good old days.

Lochgelly Homing Society is having a presentation night in November this year. I think its an important part of the club, to socialise and have a get together. We have 15 members, who are asked to bring their wife/partner, plus another couple. 60 being the total for the adequate hall that we have booked. We are having a buffet and disco, along with the presentation. Long may it continue, onwards and upwards ;).
