mark proctor Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 did you know 9 out of 10 of the 1st hatched are cocks.IE 2 pigeon eggs 1st to hatch is a cock 9 out of 10 times. that is true...
Guest Davy Fleming Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 not disputing that but just wondering about it as never heard anyone say this before but not knocking it
blaz Posted November 1, 2009 Author Report Posted November 1, 2009 i come to that conclusion via top Belgium widowhood fanciers and also Geoff cooper. i do my home work before i pass on any tips
adam owen Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 i no some 1 who only wants to race cocks and as chucked the 2nd egg away to just have cocks bred out of twenty eggs he had 17 cocks 3 hens
Guest Davy Fleming Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 never knew that blaz but find it interesting
Guest IB Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 i no some 1 who only wants to race cocks and as chucked the 2nd egg away to just have cocks bred out of twenty eggs he had 17 cocks 3 hens No offence, but I don't think that's the same thing suggested in the thread? Thread is about the first egg to hatch, nothing said about it also being the 1st egg laid? And with respect, Blaz, I would also ask same question ~ how can anyone say with any authority which of the pair of eggs hatched first? Don't they usually hatch fairly close together, and in the middle of the night, when most of us are in our pit dreaming of meeting champions in the nest in the morning?
ribble Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 I was told if you take eggs away as soon as laid for 48hr, and then put them back under parents they will be cocks.
rick Posted November 2, 2009 Report Posted November 2, 2009 Something wrong somewhere, bred 30 young birds this year,20 hens and 10 cocks ?????????? Lindsay know wat u mean mate im left with 12 hens and 2 cocks from my ybs, :(

WELSH WIZARD Posted November 2, 2009 Report Posted November 2, 2009 i was told that it was the 1st egg layed was a cock dont really know how true it is though.
greenlands Posted November 2, 2009 Report Posted November 2, 2009 Is there anyway of telling cocks from hens when very young and in the nest ? There was a theory about a magnet on a piece of thread ???????? maybe someone can help with that one. Lindsay
WELSH WIZARD Posted November 2, 2009 Report Posted November 2, 2009 there was advert at onetime in the bhw selling the same thery as the needle and cotton for a tenner.dare i say what a rip off
Guest Owen Posted November 2, 2009 Report Posted November 2, 2009 I have read that if you take the second egg laid away you will end up with 90% cocks. I tried it this year and sure enough I have mostly cocks. In fact I only have 2 hens left from the young birds. There are 12 cocks. I lost a little under 50% of the youngsters and I have no idea what ratios there were before the losses.
