Hi all,

I was just wondering how long  it would be ok to leave birds in the baskets for before taking them to the marking on a Friday night?

The reason I ask is because it would suit me to put them in in the morning when I get home from work at 5am  but I dont know whether that would have an adverse effect on them..or on the flip side would it make em fly like Joe Stink when they finally get libbed?

What are your thoughts plz guys and guyesses :)

Personally I choose to leave them in the loft till the last minute as this gives them the best chance of a drink before they go.

Leaving them in the basket from Friday morning is like giving them a 1 day hold over.

It could serve to motivare some I suppose but impossible to say really.

It's not ideal but if thats what you have to do then try and basket any dominent cockbirds seperatly, make sure they've got a drinker and put the basket somewhere dark so the birds are in a restfull state and not tireing themselves out chasing each other around the basket all day.

The Central Southern Classic FC are racing from Guernsey tomorrow - that's just over 80 miles to us and we had to send them to the marking station on Thursday. Crazy or what ?

channel birds are in the basket for 2 to 3 days so dont see the difference 8 hrs makes but thats just my opinion

For distance races the birds have got to be well acquainted with being in the basket for lengthy periods, I wouldnt have a problem with basketing early, basket training is an essential part of the process surely?

I've noticed that the birds which have spent time in the basket together settle down quietly when basketed, maybe after some initial bickering.
