DOVEScot Posted December 16, 2009 Report Posted December 16, 2009 Out of interest, do you think that there would be enough interest to sustain a unit in Fife supplying feed and products for pigeons and other birds. We have them in Edinburgh and Perth, not sure about Dundee but if we were in that direction it could cover both It could also act as a hub for couriers :-/
Guest joshdonlan Posted December 16, 2009 Report Posted December 16, 2009 you got business plans Duncan?
sapper756 Posted December 16, 2009 Report Posted December 16, 2009 Certainly would be handy, Harry use to run a petshop in Glenrothes, that stocked loads of pigeon feed and products
DOVEScot Posted December 16, 2009 Author Report Posted December 16, 2009 you got business plans Duncan? I always have business plans ;D ;D ;D I am lucky that I get my feeding cheap but you can't always get what you need at the times you need it without spending £15-£20 in diesel and two hours of your time going to Edinburgh or Perth or wait a few weeks till the next order comes in :-/ If there was enough interest then someone could lease a unit that was central and easy to find in Fife and stock a few things that you can only get at shows as well as feeding, it could also cater for other avian needs
DOVEScot Posted December 16, 2009 Author Report Posted December 16, 2009 Certainly would be handy, Harry use to run a petshop in Glenrothes, that stocked loads of pigeon feed and products Yes I have spoken to Harry about it and got some good advice:-/
THE FIFER Posted December 16, 2009 Report Posted December 16, 2009 could do with something in the fife area, used to be one at Falkland but they had to stop as people were complaining about the lorries delivering etc.
Guest joshdonlan Posted December 16, 2009 Report Posted December 16, 2009 make it a petfood superstore
DOVEScot Posted December 16, 2009 Author Report Posted December 16, 2009 Go for it,dog food too That's where the money is Clocky :-/
DOVEScot Posted December 16, 2009 Author Report Posted December 16, 2009 make it a petfood superstore Na they are going bust, Acorn pets has just closed, I think the bigger you get the bigger the overheads the bigger the head ache Keep it nice and simple and to suit the needs of customers :-/
Guest joshdonlan Posted December 16, 2009 Report Posted December 16, 2009 thats true i suppose start small and grow to suit the needs
lawrie Posted December 16, 2009 Report Posted December 16, 2009 there are places that have regular customers,so there would have to be a huge demand for the product in the area you should also sell products that aren't easy to get from shops i.e sputniks, traps boxes, baskets, even pigeons. as long is theres the demand, theres a business. maybe do it from home and see how it goes.

I looked at it from home but the problem with most homes is products like food comes in pallets and tonne loads on lorries which you would have to unload by hand in all weathers unless you had a fork lift in the garage. Any unit has to be easily found, ample parking and easy access to both the customers and suppliers. Regards products you will never get it right all the time and only time tells what sells and what doesn't, I don't think selling birds would be a great idea but using it as a hub for couriers would be worth a thought
lawrie Posted December 16, 2009 Report Posted December 16, 2009 it was a bit tight parking a ford ka when i visited, so parking a lorry would be a pain. i do agree that doing it from home would be a bit more work than from a unit. what would you sell?

That's cause you're a pis# driver Lawrie, I have had Jewson six wheelers in my drive ;D ;D ;D It would mainly be feed as that is what customers need all the time, a selection of consumable products and accessories. It is a bit like suck it see :-/
lawrie Posted December 16, 2009 Report Posted December 16, 2009 you mast have extended the drive! would you deliver the feed to my door?
DOVEScot Posted December 16, 2009 Author Report Posted December 16, 2009 you mast have extended the drive! would you deliver the feed to my door? Aye if you bring you door with you ;D Deliveries would be another possibility but like everything else it would have to be cost effective.
Delboy Posted December 16, 2009 Report Posted December 16, 2009 Go for it Duncan Its always good to see folk trying to help our sport. Its very hard to get pigeon supplies nowadays and alot of people use the internet to get their stuff. Its good to go out and get a couple of bags of feeding and have a BLETHER.

There is a lot to be considered in any business if it has any chance to succeed Is there a market if so why is no one else doing it :-/
Guest bigda Posted December 16, 2009 Report Posted December 16, 2009 but you cant sell barley at £3.50 ;D ;D ;D
DOVEScot Posted December 16, 2009 Author Report Posted December 16, 2009 but you cant sell barley at £3.50 ;D ;D ;D Maybe, I might get it cheaper by the ton ;D The only way a feed business can survive is on a supply and demand basis, there is not a big mark up in pigeon feed as it is a competitive market but if you had the volume turn over then you can make a crust. I used to work on 50%-100% mark up in sports goods you ain't going to do that in feed supplies especially in Scotland
