I don't know about pigeons, but with dogs, white can be affected by environment, within and outwith the womb.  This can result in white hairs on a newborn because of deficiencies whilst in the womb, but these white hairs change on casting whilst growing and due to a better environment, less deficiencies, change to the natural colour.

This would seem the same in pigeons given the information that the base colour to the quill is dark, or the white flight is partly coloured and on moulting changes.  Whether subsequent changes could be caused by feeding or other environmental changes is interesting.

The main point will be whether it improves as a yearling and further develops into a better bird.  If this is the case I am quite sure the flight will not be a consideration.

Interesting to hear this though.

had it many times derik ,in fact if you had looked closely at it before it moulted right at the root of the flight  you would have seen that it is dark coloured ,i have had ones that are white at the top one third  of the flight and dark/normal coloured the rest. cant remember if any were that special that had this .   :)

When you pair a red cheq with a blue is that not what produces red cheqs with black splashes..??

Ive a red cheq cock with some blue tail flights... they were black until he moulted just there...

not sure about that one jonesy,, but know that most of the reds with black splashes are cocks, the red ch hens that have dark splashes are usualy dark brown if looked closely

strange thing this genetics ;D ;D ;D i had a bull terrier crossed with a  schitsu ,, the pups were bullschits ;D ;D ;D ;D

quite possibly , but remember many old scottish strains , good hard long distance type,, the old blood reds with the black splashes,, many of these originated from dr anderson ,, also remember, birrel of douglass water having these, in fact geordie bain [bain, wallace and spalding] the first partnership to win a snfc gold award, had these pigeons,, beautifull blood reds, bold headed, big wattled  cocks , all the birds now seem to look henny ;D compared to these anyway :)
