Jacobasmith Posted December 22, 2009 Report Posted December 22, 2009 Hello, I am new to the sport, and have been looking at different breeds of pigeons. Is it possible to tell what breed a pigeon is by just looking at it? the reason i ask is becuase there are so many colours and variations out there. thankyou
Guest stb- Posted December 22, 2009 Report Posted December 22, 2009 DO YOU MEAN THE STRAIN OF RACING PIGEON OR THE BREED IE TUMBLER POUTER ??????
Jacobasmith Posted December 22, 2009 Author Report Posted December 22, 2009 To be honest, i dont know the difference between strain or breed. could you please enlighten me on the subject?
Guest IB Posted December 22, 2009 Report Posted December 22, 2009 To be honest, i dont know the difference between strain or breed. could you please enlighten me on the subject? Breed is the different types of pigeon, there are hundreds of them, e.g. pouter, tumbler, roller, fantail, etc. Strain is one person's development of a particular family of pigeons. For example John Kirkpatrick created the Kirkpatrick strain of racing pigeons. Again, there are are hundreds of strain names in racing pigeons

pigeonpete Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 The bird is a racer, And the colour is mealy :-), sex hard to tell from photos, first pis looks like a hen, but second a bit cocky, Is it the only bird you have? what are hyou plans :-)
Jacobasmith Posted December 23, 2009 Author Report Posted December 23, 2009 I also have 2 other tumblers, one cock and one hen. My plans are to get some more birds and start racing soon. but i probly wont with this one as he/she is a bit old to put a ring on.
Jacobasmith Posted December 23, 2009 Author Report Posted December 23, 2009 yep, very informative. thankyou
Guest IB Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 Jacobasmith you will not be able to race your mealy, racers must be rung with a union ID ring, registered to your name. Birds are rung when in the nest 5 - 7 days old, when their feet & toes are small & pliable enough to get the ring on. Hard to tell sex of birds at best of times. Have a look at your mealy's tail and wing flights. If they have black splatches, you have a cock bird, one without black splatches likely to be a hen, but could also be a cock. Better waiting till bird is sexually mature, behaviours usually tell.
Jacobasmith Posted December 23, 2009 Author Report Posted December 23, 2009 If i was able to get a ringed pigeon, is it possible to tranfer the ring ownership from one person to another?
pigeonpete Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 If i was able to get a ringed pigeon, is it possible to tranfer the ring ownership from one person to another? Yes no problem :-) But your best off having ybs, as they will stay with you then :-) if you buy a bird from somwhere else chances are it will go back there if it gets out :-)
