blackdog Posted December 21, 2009 Report Posted December 21, 2009 I take the water out at night, Replace it in the morning, If it re freezes during the day, then thats to bad!! Have`nt got the time to fuss about them like some. They are pigeons, they can cope alot better than you think. Just look at steaming hot race days when flying 400 miles plus in 28 degrees, they get home!(most do) I don`t think this weather bothers them to much, At the moment I let my hens out one day and the cocks the next, what ever the weather, today the hens went out in 2 inches of snow, they flew for around 90 minutes or so and then back n they came. I have kept pigeons for 30 years, they are clean, they race well, don`t suffer illnesses, never have huge losses throughout the season, I feel they are well looked after, but find that there is no need for all the flaffing around that some do. That is not criticism to anyone, just my opion. agree with you mate, we can be to good to them at times
pjc Posted December 21, 2009 Report Posted December 21, 2009 the birds don't need water 24/7, feed, put water down then empty water 1hr after feed, no freezing and birds can drink when they need it, after each feed.

Jacobasmith Posted December 21, 2009 Author Report Posted December 21, 2009 Don't the birds pick away at the polystyrene? Yeah, i was thinking that? I dont want to be cleaning up little white foam droppings
phil411 Posted December 22, 2009 Report Posted December 22, 2009 ive been changeing water twice day with luke warm water and other day some old guy told me to look in pound shop for somehand warmers that u break up in the bag then u re boil them next day then u break again and ive only had 1 frezzing drinker in the weather
Jacobasmith Posted December 22, 2009 Author Report Posted December 22, 2009 I would be really careful with cheap hand warmers. I have had the plastic split before when heating up/cooling down. I really mean it mate, there are some bad chemicals in them. Unless you put them inside another tied up bag to be safe. Goodluck, i might try that idea instead.
DOVEScot Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 Don't the birds pick away at the polystyrene? Only if they are lacking and craving ethanol ;D ;D ;D

THE FIFER Posted December 26, 2009 Report Posted December 26, 2009 Don't the birds pick away at the polystyrene? I cut it to the shape of the bowl so it is under it, yes probably if they could get at it they would, and learnt from ur post how to spell polystyrene , thanks
Roland Posted December 26, 2009 Report Posted December 26, 2009 Get a 1inch or even a two square of Polistireen... glue / tack a box like piece of plywood and fit over it and place water on top of it. Birds can't them peck at it and will help stop any freezing.
