I always use Fence Paint. And emulsion inside the loft. I've had no trouble with it yet.

what would be best to use to paint my cage i am racing my young from green gloss or green fence stain

I have attached two photos of my loft one when I first bought it (second hand), which I had to vigourously rub down because it was peeling very badly, which seemed to be varnished with red and one before I painted it in Green wood stain (which is very water resistant as when the rain fall on it,  it beads very nicely!)

I must state that the painting it green has been a godsend as it is very easy to keep clean.

Inside I have painted with silk emulsion, easily cleaned and easily wiped down.

Try using used engine oil on porous wood it works wonders and costs nothing ;) Goes on like gloss paint and the rain just runs off it easy i done my y/b loft with it and wont be buying any wood presever or paint for them again i'll tell you that much ;) ;) ;) ;)
