OLDYELLOW Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 do the widowhood cocks have to rear young to race sucesfully as i have a couple of slow laying hens i have tried dummy eggs to no avail jim Had good results with cocks not rearing but paired , its the weather i think stopping quite alot of birds laying , it tends to be a pain pairing yearlings but i do think the ones that have reared are better as have a bond with there box which helps motivation later on alls not losted tho keep trying a pot egg and can always try a big yb later from another nest if they take to it
bullcock Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 Ive raced the roundabout system for around 10 years now and always reared young birds , but 2 seasons ago I raced them "dry" which means they didn't rear" and we had a very successful season we tryed it again last year but for some reason we won well for the first 4 races then they fell away and the losses were higher than normal ??? I can't put my finger on what happened, but htis year we are rearing again as per the normal system.

bullcock Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 yes it works well , ive even had a spare cock in the widowhood end and it performed as good as the birds with nest boxes and hens to fly to, it was flying to a perch.
jim Posted February 9, 2010 Author Report Posted February 9, 2010 thank you for your comments it gives me hope thanks jim
Guest Owen Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 the main thing about Widowhood Cocks is that they fly to their box as much as to their hen. They don't have to rear to fly well. In fact the overuse of hens in a widowhood loft is a sure way of spoiling the cocks. A friend of mine has won a National with a cock that had not reared.
dwh Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 we got a poser got two cocks paird together do we leave them in same box or split them for racing sorry off topic but any ideas?

Guest stb- Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 YEAH ,WE FLY R/ABOUTWould just keep them in the boxes but in a diiferent section if you leave them the gether they will be at it all day . ps could lead the younger cocks astray ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Tony C Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 If your flying roundabout I would try pairing them up with hens. If they do pair to hens they'll more than likely pair back up with eachother once the hens have been taken away. At least this way the hens would have gone through a nesting cycle.
T_T Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 My cocks flew to their box last year never seeing a hen and didn't dissapoint me and I didn't really know what I was doing with them. This year I am racing the same but I have been fortunate to get some info on it so hopes are higher.
jim Posted February 9, 2010 Author Report Posted February 9, 2010 put the cocks on pot eggs no young under till te main race
David048 Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 as per most of the above comments, the cocks should race to their boxes - take all the perches out
