What are you on about?... the NRCC and Hull Fed. race from Lerwick, Shetland every year, liberated only yards from the sea, I've never heard anyone mentioning pigeon welfare in connection with those races. Are you saying that shouldnt be allowed? These birds were liberated well above the height of the water off a large boat travelling at relatively slow speed, I dont think any ended up in the briney. Why the batch came so low after climbing is a mystery. The other large batches were well clear.

greenlands Posted February 14, 2010 Author Report Posted February 14, 2010 Hi Hjaltland,Quote"These birds were liberated well above the height of the water off a large boat travelling at relatively slow speed" and what speed do you recon the ferry was doing when the birds were liberated look at the wake behind it 30/40 knots ? Lindsay.
Ulsterman Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 ah, so thats what brought them down so low.
ally mac Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 Hi Hjaltland,Quote"These birds were liberated well above the height of the water off a large boat travelling at relatively slow speed" and what speed do you recon the ferry was doing when the birds were liberated look at the wake behind it 30/40 knots ? Lindsay. Dont think it would have been doing more than 14 or 15 knots Lindsay, 16 or 17 mile an hour. A bit nerve racking seeing them so close to the water though. Al.
Guest IB Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 First link is puzzling, there is a behaviour there that, unless you have witnessed it before, is impossible to understand ~ until you view the second link which shows 2 BOP attacking the liberation. Shown quite clearly in the second link, a big batch of pigeons then break off and go down to just above sea level. I don't know how they know this, but that must the safest place to avoid a BOP attack, as attacking from above, the hawk must also know there's a high risk of it ending up in the sea.
