Can Condice Crystals harm pigeons if used in the bath water? I use them in the bath water to keep the feather lice down but I am told the vapours can burn the bird’s lungs although the bathing is always done outside. I have used the drops etc. but it is a bit of a job to hold the bird and put the drops as I am a one-man band.

Are there any other things that can be put in the water for this purpose?

Never had any problems using them dont think u should use too much though good for getting rid of fungus or whitespot on goldfish as well

i HAVE KEPT FISH FOR A LONG TIME AND IT WAS AN OLD MAN WHO FIRST TOLD ME TO PUT ONE SMALL CRYSTAL IN THE AQUARIUM EVERY SO OFTEN TO KEEP THE FISH IN GOOD HEALTH AS KEEPS A LOT OF LURGHI AWAY, AND I HAVE USED IT IN THE PIGEONS BATH WATER EVERY WEEK SINCE I FIRST KEPT BIRDS AND I DONT THINK I EVER SAW ANY LICE ONCE THE BIRDS STARTED BATHING IN IT AND THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO VAPOURS RELEASED FROM THEM.

I USE POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE   :P:D LOL

Think there's a lot of people use this in the bath, and I'm sure its the same stuff [condy's crystals / potassium permanganate ] that some used in the birds drinker too way back.

Thought I'd double check whats out there on it though, as the original post expressed concern on possible burns to the birds eyes. The short answer to that is its an irritant, so, yes it can burn and blister.

Was also surprised to find that the creepy-crawley type of parasites aren't on its hit-list, its more of a microbe-buster.

Judge for yourself from what's said in the following articles, first one on fish, the other on humans.

[FISH]

What It's Good At:

Potassium Permanganate (KMnO4) kills 99.9% of exposed pathogenic bacteria, kills most ciliate parasites, most fluke parasitisms, fungal infections and potassium permanganate oxidizes organics in the water, leaving it cleaner and fresher than before treatment.

Note: You will get explicit written recommendations and guidelines on the proper use of Potassium permanganate with every order. Here are some guidelines:

For flukes you should treat every third or fourth day for three or four treatments.

For ciliate parasites you should treat every day for five treatments.

Background:

Powerful oxidizer clears many ciliated protozoans, flukes, fungi and bacterial infections. Dosage and interval are critical. Use caution and dose carefully, avoid contact with skin, eyes or mucous membranes. Bypass filter and increase aeration and circulation. Can be neutralized with dechlorinator or hydrogen peroxide. Full details with product.

You should probably know:

The presence of large amounts of organic debris, uneaten food, dead fish, leaves, dead plants will cause the potassium to spend it's energy on oxidizing the organics, not on the parasites or ulcers.

The presence of dechlorinator in the water will inactivate the treatment. (Latency 2 days)

The presence of Hydrogen peroxide will inactivate treatment. (Latency 3 days)

Potassium can kill a lot of algae, increasing oxygen demand, especially in warm water over eighty degrees.

Pros: There's hardly anything with such a broad spectrum and this can be used in extremely cold water.

Cons: If carelessly overdosed, it will kill your fish. It also kills 99.9% of exposed beneficial bacteria so you're advised to avoid letting it pass through your filter.

HUMANS

Precautions

Potassium permanganate crystals and concentrated solutions are caustic and can burn the skin. Even fairly dilute solutions can irritate skin and repeated use may cause burns. If redness or irritation continues, notify your doctor. When preparing solutions make sure that the crystals or tablets are fully dissolved in water before using.

Potassium permanganate soaks are not suitable for dry skin conditions.

Note that potassium permanganate may leave a brown stain on skin and nails as well as the bath or vessel holding the solution.

THEY WERE ALSO USED FOR RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS, U MADE UP A MIXTURE UNTIL THE WATER WAS BLACK, THEN HELD THE BIRDS HEAD IN IT FOR 3 SECONDS, AND WHEN IT CAME OUT U THOUGHT THE BIRD WAS GOING TO DIE, IT COULD'NT STAND UP BUT AFTER A FEW MINS WAS OK, IT DID CLEAR THEIR HEADS, BUT THERE IS MORE MODERN METHODS ON HAND NOW, AS FAR AS KEEPING BIRDS KLEAN THROUGH THE BATH THER IS NOTHING BETTER THAN SOME STRONG GARLIOC WATER IN IT, LET CUT GARLIC BULB STAND IN A LARGE BOTTLE OF WATER FOR A WEEK OR MORE, AND PUT IT IN UR BATH WATER, U WILL NEVER SEE ANYTHING ON UR BIRDS, AND IS GOOD FOR THEM.

im sure its ok but i wouldnt put anything in the bath water as the birds will drink it and im sure reading the reports on this stuff it cant do them that good to ingest it. thats just my opinion, there are safer ways to rid the birds of lice and mites, spot on treatment on the back of the next last 6 months is just one of them, for me clean bath water all the time.
