billy wilson Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 i have always used oat straw, only my opinion but barley straw is to dirty, and wheat straw a bit on the briitle side for me.
jimmy white Posted February 17, 2010 Report Posted February 17, 2010 A word of warning,I would advise against using barley straw,it has a tendancy to go mouldy when the birds are sitting.Wheat straw far better. Lindsay nice dry straw the birds love, but would beware as the above post says, the mould from damp straw can cause severe health probs [aspergiliosis] , if used, better to renew regular [maybe not at that price above ;D ;D,,, by the sound of it anyway ;D ;D], but better kept dry and fresh
Guest Owen Posted February 17, 2010 Report Posted February 17, 2010 Not a good idea to use Barley Straw. Your birds could get eye injuries. I used it with my pigs years ago, never again. Why not use Oat Straw or even clean Wheat Straw?

Why not use Oat Straw or even clean Wheat Straw? I like barley straw , the kind that has been flattened when threshed, as owen says dont like it with the solid stocks as they can be very jaggie for the birds. you can see the difference in the bails the flattened stuff is very soft when you rub your hand against the side the solid stuff will give you a good scratch
pigeonscout Posted February 17, 2010 Report Posted February 17, 2010 If you can get down to portaferry I will get you all you need All the lofts I was at in Holland used pea straw but I found that shredded paper was better. You can get big bales of it at old manner mill in Newtownards they stock it for horse bedding
cowman Posted February 17, 2010 Report Posted February 17, 2010 talking about straw and hearing people say about it being jaggy for the birds in the wild they use twigs and sticks surly they are jaggy for the birds .
