March the 21st (The Spring Equanox) is the official day when the youngsters should be put onto darkness. This is the day when the day and night length are the same.

thats ok martin some get carried away with the word dark and are falling all over the place when they go in to the loft no need for that

weaned a lot of mine on monday straight on to dark just don't know if the loft is dark enough, newbie at this gemme

Set the system to suit you. The loft should be dark enough but doesnae need to be pitch wae plenty ventilation. The length of time is open to opinion but 6 weeks min, again wot suits you. JMO

Ventilation is more important than pitch black,

You will always get a couple who will drop a flight but once you have them in a darkened loft they will hold the rest for most of the season.

Better to have healthy birds with a couple of dropped flights than sick birds with full wings IMO.
