Guest cosmic dave Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 Now (with a lot of help from you guys, thanks) we have got our birds flying when do I need to start driving them a mile up the road to release them ? David
edthekid Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 not till they start to roam...dont push em
pigeonpete Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 Not yet mate, let them get there bearings and wait till they go off ranging, Have they been in the basket much? This is what i would do one night when u have got them in, feed them, but dont give them water, basket them up with water troughs on, so they get used very early to drinking in the basket, will stand them in good stead dont even worry about road traing them yet. :-)

David Plenty of time yet mate,I would say about four weeks before your first race, keep your eye on the weather forcasts,if it's going downhill you can always sneak a couple of tosses in. Lindsay
peterpau Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 Cosmic I aint started training my birds for Tarbes yet and wont much before May. Slow down let 'em roam first.
peterpau Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 Oooooooooooooh I forgot to add thats when you look up in to an empty sky and panick for an hour or two. ;D ;D
Guest Owen Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 As the Guys have said, let them enjoy just flying and looking around your area. You need to teach them to trap properly on your call and stay on top of their health and you are well set for training a bit later on. It is a good idea to familiarise them to the basket to avoid them panicing later. They also need to be totally confident in eating and drinking in the basket.
JohnQuinn Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 Oooooooooooooh I forgot to add thats when you look up in to an empty sky and panick for an hour or two. ;D ;D Glad you remembered that bit, it'll save the lad losing his hair too early. Quite right to take it easy just now. I tend to wait til they get fed up roaming and want to hang around the loft again before i train them, but there truly are many ways to skin this cat!
Guest pigeon82 Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 my ybs have been roaming for a few weeks now so i took them up theroad a couple of times 2 miles 3 times then 4 .5 miler 2 days ago but have got them coming in now like bullets took them 20 mins to do 4.5 miles got back to the house i shook the jug and got them in within minutes of being back just trying to get them use to the basket by doing short tossess and also getting them to trap quickly best way these birds are trapping for me is to throw a few peanuts in trap and they dive right threw but like everyone says just wait till they range or are a tight group in the sky
