THE FIFER Posted August 9, 2008 Report Posted August 9, 2008 The SHU was into this for years and cost a lot of money, also collecting dead birds killed by hawks etc, had more leaflets out than you can imagine, had members of parliment on their side, had fanciers writing to their mp's, they done everything you can think about, and where did it get them, :(, you are not just taking on the RSPB, they have a very large membership of the public, and hawks dont really bother the vast magority of the public, only those like pigeon fanciers who love birds, but there are a bigger majority of the public who dont like pigeons, and its only the older members who know what pigeons done during the wars, the younger generation dont even know about the wars let alone the involvement of our pigeons, so I dont think we would get much help from the public in the large numbers we would require to get anything done, get in touch with the secretary of the SHU, she will give you some info.
Merlin Posted August 9, 2008 Report Posted August 9, 2008 I have no doubt whatever they decide,we will back them fully to the best of our ability.but on a personal note I would like to see it from a broader perspective than pigeons alone, there are many species suffering from the overpopulation of these Raptors, and if the public knew their donations intended for songbirds, were being used to overpopulate their Predators, well.
Guest peter.j Posted August 9, 2008 Report Posted August 9, 2008 R.S.P.B really save pigeons board, real slaughter peregrines bring maybe a name like this and youll get hits off there own members
THE FIFER Posted August 9, 2008 Report Posted August 9, 2008 Think you are right fifer we need to put bit of thought into this and where we are going and how we can do it I know down here there are lot of retired people whose life revolves round their gardens they like sitting watching the birds it attracts and they are not happy seeing the hawk sitting on their lawn ripping to pieces the birds they like feeding and watching I would love to see something getting done about the HAWKS, I have lost 3 birds in the past 2 weeks, the hawks are here all the time, and its not nature for hawks and crows and seaguls being in your back garden, but they are there today, and more of them, but in todays society this is the norm, and you dare not touch them, a lot of people want the protection lifted from hawks, that would make no difference, all birds are protected, do them any harm be it hawks crows sparrows or what you are in trouble , so lifting the protection wont let you kill them, or harm them, I remember as a youngster, each year they had a crow kull, yes in the towns, where there were trees, and you used to see dead crows hanging from the fences so to frighten other away, not now, even farmers have to get a permit to cull them, the SHU fought this for years even got some slag from its members for commiting too much time and money, I think you would find if put to the public you would get more against pigeons than hawks, as I said its wrong hawks seagulls and crows are over populated, and they are all capable of deleting our song birds, moreso the hawks and carrion crows, the country is palluted with them, and really what good are hawks and crows to the country, NONE.
THE FIFER Posted August 9, 2008 Report Posted August 9, 2008 I think a good start would be to get in touch with Linda Brookes she was in the thickest of it all with the SHU, and they have a lot of info on it, I must have a look as I had a lot of the posters and reports on it as well being on the council, but dont know if they are still around,
frank-123 Posted August 9, 2008 Report Posted August 9, 2008 get away from saving pigeons as most of the public think feral most have never seen a racing pigeon save the songbirds and that would just happen to save our racers as well or just put the money into an eagleowl realease that would wipe out peregrines faster than your fight with the rspb which would cost to much money fight fire with fire i suppose you all have great idea's and plans thing is it would take to long
THE FIFER Posted August 9, 2008 Report Posted August 9, 2008 Never got much feedback on what Linda and the SHU did or tried to do down here could never understand why they never got the backing from the RPRA dont know why the RPRA did,nt get involved, but it was a big thing with the SHU so big fanciers were getting fed up with it as it went on and on and getting nowhere, plenty publicity, and members getting leaflets etc, and anyone having dead birds were to send them along to the sHU they were kept in freezers etc and produced as evidence, yes a lot was done,, but you just cant beat the RSPB, good god they even have their own police in most towns just looking after birds of pray, and wildlife,
DOVEScot Posted August 9, 2008 Report Posted August 9, 2008 dont know why the RPRA did,nt get involved, but it was a big thing with the SHU so big fanciers were getting fed up with it as it went on and on and getting nowhere, plenty publicity, and members getting leaflets etc, and anyone having dead birds were to send them along to the sHU they were kept in freezers etc and produced as evidence, yes a lot was done,, but you just cant beat the RSPB, good god they even have their own police in most towns just looking after birds of pray, and wildlife, They even have parts of the army involved, we may need you marine commando skills Fifer :)
THE FIFER Posted August 9, 2008 Report Posted August 9, 2008 They even have parts of the army involved, we may need you marine commando skills Fifer :) yes would take the whole 3 commando brigade to have a chance ;D some airfields use birds of pray to keep the area clear of pigeons etc. the seagulls and carrions have a go at the hawks but they dont keep them away, I have dozens of carrions around me but the hawks are still there, and sometimes the carrions are worse than the hawks for killing the pigeons.
jimmy white Posted August 9, 2008 Report Posted August 9, 2008 i handed in to the last shu secy, over 500 pigeon rings, found beneath perigrines nests by gamekeepers [including the letters and addy,s of the game keepers] this was AFTER the rspb cleared their nests of pigeon rings [see hawks posts] i also sent the whole hawk post to linda including the pictures :-/..............in my book the rspb should be charged with the theft of the owners rings [the fanciers had to pay for them ,so they belong to them ] if this could be possible to go to court ,and the fanciers won their case [i,e proof, cameras, witnesses etc] this would have a devastating effect on the rspb,,,,,,,,,,,,BUT, THEY ARE GOD, OR THEY THINK THEY ARE...THERE IS BUT ONLY ONE GOD, so my thoughts are that this should be looked into very carefully ,,,,,,,,,not one ring has been reported by the rspb as being found in a bird of prey,s nest, but plenty have been found by the rspb in their nests ,,,,,,,,,so where have they went,THE RSPB HAVE MOST CERTAINLY NOT RETURNED THEM BACK TO THE RIGHTFULL OWNERS, TO ME, THAT IS STEALING

As Vic was saying! Give a dog a bad name! Most of Joe Public, see them as flying rats. Always remember this! Extermination of this scourge in the sky, can only be controlled by nature. (Human Maybe)? Let us work together by all means, but none of the PR wagons PLEASE!
Guest Vic Posted August 10, 2008 Report Posted August 10, 2008 what way would you suggest going vic IT'S A CASE OF LIVING OR DYING BY THE SWORD. I am sure we have enough learned men between us to sort some of the infested areas out, without any of us losing sleep. But we still must have some financial backing to support the eradication procedure. The rspb have been enjoying birds for years, AND the BERNARD MATTHEWS products for too long. I bet they all eat turkeys at Xmas.. LOL.
Roland Posted August 10, 2008 Report Posted August 10, 2008 Well, we could all start by using Ivertimin POUR ON for starters. And the biigest thing for anyPolitician to get noted is a Band Wagon. Sorry can't see there bing much difference in 5 - 10 years, except less birds, and soon the BOP being cannibalistic ... have to be, nowt else left to eat. But can't see any movement here / there, or else where - mores the pity - for that matter. Any and EVERY thing that needs a 'Public agenda, a point to get over, needs and HAS a good PR Firm. £22000 would more than see one up and running for a year or two. Yes the RPRA can well afford the funding and have a regular 'Spokesman' etc every year. Why don't they? Well quite simple the members won't have it, what a 50p levy would pay for it! No way, and as for spending funds, they were / are up in arms. Sadly it seems yet again that we are our own worst eminies! No wonder the RSPB laugh at us"!
just ask me Posted August 10, 2008 Report Posted August 10, 2008 look lads it would take a fair few bob to get it off the ground be better off if we spend 1 less hour on here and get out and actally do something i put a fair amount of time in and see results lol
Guest Posted August 10, 2008 Report Posted August 10, 2008 i dont realy know why i botherd telling people on this site about the jackets i made .the thread went missing ,and i will tel you why ,because they work ,and every body can use them ,and it only cost about 15p each to make ,mabe if i had put that i would make them for a £5 each more would try them ,i have made them for some people but only a couple have botherd trying them out ,with good results i will not make any more for others because i dont like wasting my time ,just to let you know i have made my living of the wild life for the past 35 years i have used just about every trap, and net going ,the only problem with this jacket is that it will cause a real stink with the RSPB . ,[if you do decide to try them please remember it is a jacket to stop your birds from mating ,dont let them get out with it on because if a hawk grabs the bird with it on the hawks feet will get tangled up in it and it wont be able to catch another meal ]ATB les.

Roland Posted August 10, 2008 Report Posted August 10, 2008 I agree les, your jacket is a great bit of gear ... personally I think it should have a permant placing with the Other constant topics like Sticky's. Come Webmaster, leave it up front for all to see, refer back to at any time.
ChrisMaidment08 Posted August 10, 2008 Author Report Posted August 10, 2008 i withdraw as i may upset someone
