Roland Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 One mustn't tar all with concerns with the same brush. Some of the RSPB do in fact care for our birds and concerns. Indeed a few years back now, the RSPCC joined force with the RSPB to find, and devise a way to deter Hawks / B.O.P. from eating pigeons. This is very true, and is of course legal and was indeed from their’ own findings. They came up with the idea of salt mixed into Gooses fat. This did, and does work. O.k. some poor pigeon will have to be eaten first obviously. But the B.O.P. / Hawk will never ever eat another pigeon again. This is a fact! Now of course Goose fat is not always attainable. But what works even better is common lard. Just mix the salt into the lard and smear on the pigeons. Doesn't impair flying at all etc. of course for starters. But at least if the poor bird has to be eaten, it will be of a benefit in saving 100’s of others the same fate. Yes it does work. It is legal and very cost effective.
gangster Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 mmmmmmmmmmmmmm sounds good and if it works all the better..
chickadee Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 Certainly worth a try although sad for the guinea pig pigeons that have to suffer till the hawks and falcons learn this valuable lesson :-/ Also not all pigeon fanciers should be tarred with the same brush as wanting all raptors euthanized to save their pigeons, just a healthy balance on both sides would do
Roland Posted June 29, 2009 Author Report Posted June 29, 2009 unfortunately many every day let them birds out to exercise. This is when the peregrine for example strikes and takes one or two. Especially in early mornings when all are hungry. Sad to say, if a bird is taken at least it might carry a preventive on it's body to save the nexts ones... Sadly if salted or not, once it has been caught it is eaten mostly.
Guest challengerlofts Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 just wonder racing pigeons don't have any protection from RSPCA / RSPB. they should give attention as well, if they really care about animals.
Roland Posted June 30, 2009 Author Report Posted June 30, 2009 How that everyone truble by Hawks and B.O.P. etc. take note. This is anoter legal and working way of helping relieving their / our problems.
pjc Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 using this might help the problem but won't do your racers much good! What a mess they'll look with grease smeared on them and what chance have they got racing in that condition as the birds will prean and injest the mixture!
Guest Freebird Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 Anyone know if there has ever been a "gadget" incorporated in the racing ring i.e. electronics to deter hawks. Maybe someone with knowledge in this field could come up with an Invention. Just a thought as all racers have to be rung. Something like the sonic mouse deterents you can buy and just plug in. Maybe a silly idea but hey, you just never know.

superstar Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 mmmmmmmmmmmmmm sounds good and if it works all the better.. Dont you mean if it works all the BUTTER lol
pigeonpete Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 Dont you mean if it works all the BUTTER lol your talents are waisted sir! ;-) lol
Roland Posted July 2, 2009 Author Report Posted July 2, 2009 THATS A GOOD IDEA M8 ;D ;D ;D Salt works :-/ Pigeons drink water for instance.... hawks and B.O.P. DON'T. So why does one try and find 'Gadgets' etc. and any other thing. Further the Juice of the Rhubarb leaf will not tolerate any bird. All and any bird devouring any thing laced as such quickly dies. Usually within the hour.
