An old wifes tale seemingly, it can be any combination in the nest and also genetics and colour play a big part as well with some outcomes :-/

hope it doesent seem butting in on this thread but its on the same lines is there any way of telling the sex of a young one in the nest as in a sex indicator would be usefull if there was
......my old pal had 1 of those and swore by it....hovered it over them in the nest and kept the 1 it indicated was a cock....got 2 say it was pretty often right....

Micko, size is usually related to one hatching  a while before the other one, sometimes upto a day apart, and if you noticed how quick the squabs grow you'll see one day is a big difference at that age. Most nests tend to be cock/hen, but i remember reading somewhere that single sex nests account for 25%.

Differing sizes in the same nest can be down to a number of things, but I think its fair to say that the bigger of the two is usually a cock - the cock pigeon usually bigger than the hen.

Agree a nest can be two of any sex. Can't really recall my last nest pair that was a cock and hen.

if both ybs face same way in nest they are same sex, if both face opposite ways they are one of each, this is approx 90% accurate, dont know if this helps? cant remember if its the cocks or hens that usually face towards back of nestbox,? i have also found that when ringing say with rings 11 and 12, i ring the bigger yb with the 1st ring, again approx 90% of the time the first one rung will be the hen
