DOVEScot Posted November 7, 2007 Report Posted November 7, 2007 y is it you all ways have to make fun of it HAWKS are a pigeon fanciers enemy well mine anyway this is a pigeon site and not a place for two people to be discussing hawks if you find that funny then a dont think your a true pigeon lover Sammy wild hawks are only doing what is natural, my beef is with the authorities that protect them to a point we are over run with them in certain areas. And the fact if one becomes a nuisance around your stock whatever it is you should be able to protect it. If I thought for one second Eagleowl and Brianm were letting their captive ones loose on our pigeons then it would be different If I had the knowledge and time etc I would gladly have an eagle owl to ward off predators, or a tawny to feed on the rats and mice. But I imagine it is not that easy. I would be off my head to get a female sparrow hawk if I kept pigeons, all falconers are not the same or keep the same birds :-/
Guest dogeon Posted November 7, 2007 Report Posted November 7, 2007 mainly the female sparrowhawk kills pigeons be it woodpigeon or racing pigeon its the quality and richness of food its after ,yes ive seen them kill magpies before ive seen them catch young rabbits.it always seems to be the female who attacks the larger birds and the male the little birds, you only have to work out how many birds a pair will kill each season and you wonder why we have no songbirds about thats not including the 12,000 pairs peregrines on these shores it was in the worcester papers that the peregrines they put there to kill the town pigeons are now attacking the seagulls
brianm Posted November 7, 2007 Report Posted November 7, 2007 i have only ever taken legal quarry spieces with my birds , ie rabbits , crows duck and pheasant, indeed it is not advisable to allow your bird to eat pigion as they carry a harmless condtion (to the pigion that is ) called frounce ,but it is lethal to raptors any how after my illness i plan to give up BOP and keep fancy doos

brianm Posted November 7, 2007 Report Posted November 7, 2007 pretty much duncan ,, depends on condtion of the raptor , ie low in weight and the level of the frounce , its a fungal infection that pigions get from eating grain ,it looks like cotton wool on the throat of the raptor
just ask me Posted November 8, 2007 Report Posted November 8, 2007 look way i see it its time we started to protect our sport eveyone knows that hawks or fallcons will be biggest threat our great sport has come again and we have a massive campagin by so called bird lovers to protect these birds when not only our loved birds are being killed but the song bird population has gone the tubes time us as pigeon men and i mean everyone done there bit for the sport
frank-123 Posted November 8, 2007 Report Posted November 8, 2007 the rspb have millions of members so have a very powerful voice but in time i see the honest rspb member turning its back on the rspb due to the loss of small songbirds but it might be to late for the pigeon game one way is to join the gamekeepers, save our songbirds groups that may make our voice heard a little bit louder than it is just now
just ask me Posted November 8, 2007 Report Posted November 8, 2007 maybe an idea there bart but how long will that take look what money we spend on charity in blackpool show and rightlly so but a wise old man said to me one time charity begins at home if we used some this money to advertise our sport and whats happening to it with hawks and fallcons and something was done it would mean more fanciers stay in the sport and new fanciers come in which means down the line there would even be more money for charity rspb is an orginsed massive pr machine and we need to do something or else we will be called the forgotten men just a tought

Roland Posted November 10, 2007 Report Posted November 10, 2007 Like also the 'Fish Tank ... could have a breeding pair in there ... The wire cage with a hole at top, with a sauspan shape wire inside that stops them being able to fly or CLIMB out is a very easy and effective way of curbingpercy's antics....
