Peckedhen Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Does anyone give their pigeons coal dust? I was sweeping out the coal bin and the fantails came down and seem to love the stuff. I guess it's full of minerals though they do have the clay mineral blocks too. I was wondering whether to start giving it to my Logans but I don't want their white feathers dirtying!! ;D
Guest SMUDGER PETE Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 simple dont give it to them if you dont want your birds black but it's good for them. a mate of mine lets his birds out the first pleace thay go is the old coal yard so it must be some good in it. yes they do come back black but he carnt stop them from going there.

Guest SMUDGER PETE Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 the devil you do the devil you dont ...........old saying ;D
chickadee Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Yes coal dust is full of goodness for the birds, some pregnant women have been known to eat coal and it hasn't done their babies any harm.
Andkar Lofts Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 totally agree coal dust is full minerals, used to be a favourite years ago as source minerals ,well before ,they started producing the black minerals etc .... yes true about pregnant women eating coal ....wife did ,but kids are ??... ;D ;D ;D
THE FIFER Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 I go down the beach and scrape up grit which also has very small particles of coal, the birds love it, and you always see teams of racers down on the beach picking at the grit.

I was wondering whether to start giving it to my Logans but I don't want their white feathers dirtying!! ;D it has a high content of carbon in it as well, also knew two extremely well known pigeon fliers who excelled some time back in racing and they also owned a coalyard that was next to their lofts, their birds were never away from the coal heaps and it never did them any harm.
bewted Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 also keeps the birds crop lovely and sweet so wont get sourcrop at all with it !!!
tommy d Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 i have 22 white tumblers, they love it and dont get much on them,
chickadee Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Does anyone know if it's coal that they put into the black minerals?
Merlin Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Coal dust is an excellent mineral for pigeons,it was used by many of the older fanciers, aware of its benifits, but sadly its not an item in use to day,as for birds visiting the beach I tend to think its for the salt content found on the beach grit which they are after, too much salt lis taboo for pigeons
hellsbellz Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 Sometimes if I've had a fire my pigeons will pick at pieces of charred wood, so it must do them some good
bewted Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 Sometimes if I've had a fire my pigeons will pick at pieces of charred wood, so it must do them some good GOOD FOR SWEETENING THE PIGEONS CROP,SO,WONT GET SOURCROP !!!!!!!
Roland Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 Charcoal has great blessings, not least - like sugar - a great eye cleanser. If one every sees they birds pecking and missing the pea... place charcoal in front of them. Be right as ninepence next day.
Guest Paulo Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 A lot of old pitman used to give their birds coal dust
chickadee Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 A lot of old pitman used to give their birds coal dust Well I think I'll have to get a bag of coal dust for our birds, it's a lot cheaper than buying black minerals.
bewted Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 Well I think I'll have to get a bag of coal dust for our birds, it's a lot cheaper than buying black minerals. BIG YES !!!!!
Guest slugmonkey Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 coal and charcoal are 2 diffrent things coal being mined, whereas charcoal is manufactured from wood or wood pulp and fillers I use a grit that has charcoal in it and the birds seem to love it I have also given my birds activated charcoal ( the kind you use in an aquarium filter ) and they like it as well I wish I had access to coal as I am sure it has minerals as well as some sulfur compounds and is probably very good for the birds ????
Peckedhen Posted January 10, 2008 Author Report Posted January 10, 2008 Thanks for all the replies. I'll definitely give the Logans coal dust. It sounds like the benefits outweigh them getting a bit grubby!! ;D
