Does anyone give their pigeons coal dust?  I was sweeping out the coal bin and the fantails came down and seem to love the stuff.  I guess it's full of minerals though they do have the clay mineral blocks too.  I was wondering whether to start giving it to my Logans but I don't want their white feathers dirtying!! ;D

Coal has a lot of different properties in it, and they also vary depending on where the coal was mined from, in general coal will not harm the pigeons, miners that were fanciers used to take it home and crush it for their birds :)

I go down the beach and scrape up grit which also has very small particles of coal, the birds love it, and you always see teams of racers down on the beach picking at the grit.

it has a high content of carbon in it as well, also knew two extremely well known pigeon fliers who excelled some time back in racing and they also owned a coalyard that was next to their lofts, their birds were never away from the coal heaps and it never did them any harm.

Coal dust is an excellent mineral for pigeons,it was  used by many of the older fanciers, aware of its benifits, but sadly its not an item in use to day,as for birds visiting the beach I tend to think its for the salt content found on the beach grit

which they are after, too much salt lis taboo for pigeons

Sometimes if I've had a fire my pigeons will pick at pieces of charred wood, so it must do them some good   :P

Charcoal has great blessings, not least - like sugar - a great eye cleanser.

If one every sees they birds pecking and missing the pea... place charcoal in front of them. Be right as ninepence next day.

coal and charcoal are 2 diffrent things coal being mined, whereas charcoal is manufactured from wood or wood pulp and fillers I use a grit that has charcoal in it and the birds seem to love it I have also given my birds activated charcoal ( the kind you use in an aquarium filter ) and they like it as well I wish I had access to coal as I am sure it has minerals as well as some sulfur compounds and is probably very good for the birds ????
