When I was a little boy a long time ago now, I'm 70, my Grandfather was pigeon mad. He had a small farm at the time. According to my Mother and her brothers and sisters he would disappear and they would usually find him sitting with his pigeons at the loft he had in a remote corner of his farm. I asked Mother if he raced his birds. No, she said, he just liked looking at them and watched them flying around the area. At that point I had quite a romantic picture of the old boy.

Well, I said, if he didn't race them they must have been breeding so he must have had a heck of a lot. No, says Mother, every so often he would kill a lot off and your Grandmother would cook them for supper.

Another image ruined.

I couldn't eat pigeon but I do know someone who eats their eggs scrambled and swears they make the best Yorkshire puds.  Me? I throw the eggs into the field for the crows. :)

good comment mate i like wood pigeon breasts fried in garlic oil

Posted

the breast meat is nice fried or in a pie

but you need a few for a pie

when i raced few years ago at end of year all surplus were eaten

but i remember when the pmv Vaccination started one was oil based (carnt remember which it was) but the birds done with this had a oily flesh and not nice to eat

thing is  that what  have they been treated for in the past  in the old days they just fed the birds  then had them for there teas  but nowday  most treat there pigeons  with all kinds off stuff  :-/

most of what we eat today is pumped up with steroids and anti biotics so i would not worry about it  :) :) :)
