john short Posted September 2, 2009 Report Posted September 2, 2009 just a wee question.do you think it would be possible to jump y/bs from 110 miles to 253miles safely.last week my fed sent to appleby(scottish midland).this week there is a scottish central combine race from wakefield but looking at the weather our side,i don't know whether to miss this one.if i do then there would be a big jump required for the snfc national from leicester.your opinions would be welcomed.
Guest Posted September 2, 2009 Report Posted September 2, 2009 i will be jumping mine from 187 to 318 in next weeks national and some of the NE lads will be jumping from about 130 ish to 360 ish
FoxesFan4Ever Posted September 2, 2009 Report Posted September 2, 2009 Hi John, I know I am new to the game and probably not the person you want to answer but some of my birds were jumped 50 miles to 160 this week with no losses. Not the same scale I know but surely the principle is the same? A well experienced member of the club I joined told me that so long as my birds know 20 miles in all directions from their loft they will figure how to get home out themselves. They just maybe a bit slower at first is all. Hope I helped and good luck with them if you do let them go.
pjc Posted September 2, 2009 Report Posted September 2, 2009 If they are fit, healthy and have been well prepared then they should be fine but be prepared for some losses as some won't cope with the jump!
john short Posted September 2, 2009 Author Report Posted September 2, 2009 pjc- i think they are in good nick.i have only raced the last 3 y/b races due to having been on holiday.1st race i took first 4,2nd race took first 7 and last week took 1st,2nd and 6th.the big concern i have is that i only have 17 y/bs left.at the moment i am swaying towards jumping 6ish into the national.
Guest milkyal Posted September 2, 2009 Report Posted September 2, 2009 Gave some of mine thier first race this monday at 107 mls strong south wind winner doing 1021 (i think) mine were 980. Bit slow but they got here four of these will go to 250 mile race this week. If you believe they can do it and they are healthy put them in.

Guest WINGS 04 Posted September 2, 2009 Report Posted September 2, 2009 are you y/birds on the darkness ?

Remember dont put all your eggs in the one basket as the YBN has been known to be a bit of a grave yard, maybe try and split your young bird national pigeons with half going to you combine race this weekend which will give them the fly that the really require before the young bird national.

Guest Gareth Rankin Posted September 2, 2009 Report Posted September 2, 2009 how would you train your young birds for the YBN race ? this year with them having to sit for 2 weeks ? Was planning to send them to Wakefield with another Fed from Scotland this weekend but now with only 3 or 4 young birds that are in good enough feather to go with, will now exercise around the loft and give 6 training tosses from 13 miles to 35 miles.

Going by your results so far you have a good team of young birds. These birds could go on to have a long and sucessful racing career so why take the chance for this one race. They are only young birds and good young birds at that, so take it easy with them.
john short Posted September 4, 2009 Author Report Posted September 4, 2009 i would like to thank all members who gave their opinions.i have found them interesting and i am grateful for the repilies.i have sent 7 out of my 17 to wakefield and kind of hedged my bets if you know what i mean.will let you know of returns after the race.
