fred smyth Posted November 23, 2009 Report Posted November 23, 2009 i got no old bird s to race this year as im only starting back, just got a dozen late breds and there very late, so i thinking has any one ever tried putting old rings on there december bred young birds and racing them as old birds they would be 5 months old and we race y birds that young , so i was going to try it with 10 or 12 , just to give me a bit of interest in the old bird races i no they wont beat the w/hood old birds, but its just me trying to get some racing in sted of having to wait till august :) :) ,, or is it just a waste of a y bird , ps ive heard pep put scaldies in races and won with them,
mart_1986 Posted November 23, 2009 Report Posted November 23, 2009 if you put them on the darkness they'll be like yearlings try it and find out
Guest Posted November 23, 2009 Report Posted November 23, 2009 that is a silly question . you never know till you try ,i will be happy to see you have a go ,and will be interested in youre results . and good luck. andy.
retired Posted November 23, 2009 Report Posted November 23, 2009 I know of fanciers that have done this for the various Old Hen Nationals
ribble Posted November 23, 2009 Report Posted November 23, 2009 It has crossed my mind to do it and not bother with the Y/B season.
Roland Posted November 23, 2009 Report Posted November 23, 2009 Had late July Birds flew 469 miles. Also a September Late bred that won the Scotish averages on her own next season. Did it twice more too and in another club. Old birds won't keep up with youngsters. Some say that you tire them and burn them out :-/ Never seen a youngster that runs and plays all day, out for the count then next day raring to go again. Likewise with pigeons I'm a thinking. Like I say Was in canada when the flew 2 - 3 400miles and over BACK to back!
Hogni Posted November 23, 2009 Report Posted November 23, 2009 Just do it, you wont be sorry if you prepair them correctly.
blaz Posted November 23, 2009 Report Posted November 23, 2009 i think you should try it.no need for darkness system as bird are bred in December .also dont say that they won,t beat widowhood birds. some yb,s i think when released for the 1st or 2nd race panic and race home in panic.they get that much of a fright being away from the safety of their loft .
Guest southern and mason Posted November 23, 2009 Report Posted November 23, 2009 a dun it this year a lost a load of ybs last year and bred 21 ybs in october and raced them in the old bird program the second race a shud av won but they wudnt drop and the lad in fronts came and went str8 in a end up bin 3rd club 13th fed 4th club 16th fed with them then the week afta got 1 which was 2nd club 12th fed then got 2 the week afta that was 4th club 15th fed and 5th club 21st fed then they startd 2 drop off but they went 2 every race a dropd 8 out of 21 which a was happy wit
wings Posted November 23, 2009 Report Posted November 23, 2009 I would be interested to see how you do, when you have raced them put another post up so we all can see, as was stated earlier put then on the darkness.
blaz Posted November 23, 2009 Report Posted November 23, 2009 i can,t understand why some are saying put them on darkness.when the yb,s will only be raced April to June
fred smyth Posted November 24, 2009 Author Report Posted November 24, 2009 i can,t understand why some are saying put them on darkness.when the yb,s will only be raced April to June i no December bred are on natural darkness
Guest southern and mason Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 a no a dident put them on the dark
gooner Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 i was going to do it myself this year just to boost the old bird team as i only started back last year but i will not be ready to pair up intime
pigeonpete Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 Sounds a good idea to me :-) will try it myself next year maybe, as no where near prepared for dec breeding :-)
Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 Alot of the belgiums also breed in december and ring them with that years ring so when they are 5 months old they will race against old birds . its a well known fact young birds are faster than old birds just look at when you get a old hens race and a young bird race on the same day the young birds always do a faster vel . and its not cheating as the bird has a ring in the year it was born in lol

As we say, take a flipping good o /b to beat a youngster.
Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 theres a big article on it in the de duif book
Guest bakes Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 ive also heard off friends that it would take a good oldbird to beat a yb but the only downside in that would the yb have the nolidge that the oldbird has achieved via from his previouse racing but do agree a yb first races they go off like rockets from transporter to get back home as it scares them being away from the saftey of there homes after a few races they will settle. all the best. k.baker
Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 its all ready been proven bakes look at the nrcc dunbar race the young bird winner was 100 yards or so in front of the old hens winner a lot of the young birds where on there 4 race i also know a few where on there first ever race
john bingham Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 my stock have been paired 4 days and are going great so far got to try other wise we wouldnt know i race them in the later part of the old birds season i know an few locals anit happy about it but they can do one i have no oldens as i give all my father birds to the cancer sale of mick bowlers hopefull they will get 6 races up to 300 miles
john bingham Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 ill will put old rings on them forgot to say
leighton1984 Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 Have seen this happen and how i see it you are racing old birds as they was bred in 09 so to me they are old birds if raced in 2010 the only thing that will be hard is loft flying and getting them down the road as they will hit some hawks if trained very early. when they have been open age races in my area the young birds are all ways in front of the old birds some good cash can be won racing how you are thinking of trying if the bird had been rung with a 09 ring and 10 ring you can race it with the old and young bird races but i not do that myself. they was a post that they was 2010 rings on ebay.
Guest frank dooman Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 i can,t understand why some are saying put them on darkness.when the yb,s will only be raced April to June i thought of that as well but the darkness does mature them as well blaz well they look more mature
