Am I doing something wrong? get yourself some peanuts and then start again...peanuts will tame them in a week or two...watch how much it afects their wold ways....but dont walk b4 you can walk with them...dont be making any sudden moves and keep talking to them.
pjc Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 they will soon eat from your hand/ food tin when they are hungry, once they have the confidence to take food from you they will keep doing it. All about building confidence.
Guest stb Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 BABY BIRD DID YOU BREED BIRDS IN YOUR LOFT ,WERE THE PARENTS QUIET BIRDS. WHEN YOU GO TO FEED THEM SIT IN CORNER AND THROW 1 GRAIN AT A TIME BRINGING IT CLOSER ALL THE TIME UNTIL THEY ARE QUITE CLOSE, DONT TRY AND OVER DO IT EVERY NOW AND THEN HOLD OUT A BIT OF MAIZE AND SEE IF ONE TAKES IT GAIN ITS CONFIDENCE THEN START HOLDING ON A BIT AND LET THEM PULL AT IT BEFORE YOU GIVE IT TO THEM, KEEP REPEATING EVERY NIGHT UNTILL THEY SETTLE DOWN AND WILL EVENTUALLY EAT FROM YOU AND LET YOU PICK THEM UP. PATIENCE IS THE SECRET.
Babybird Posted June 23, 2009 Author Report Posted June 23, 2009 Got them from Chrissy and Tammy ,don't know about the parents tho. Will give the above a go, maybe my fault for not wanting to stress them out /push them as I have only had them for a week. They wont eat peanuts in their feed tray,I have tried a couple of times but they just leave them
jimmy w Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 u r givin to much to eat cut the feed down and they will soon be looking for u always have handfae peanuts in ur pocket as atreat now and again good luck
Tony C Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 Peanuts but sometimes it can be a sod getting them to eat them so in the meantime always talk to them when entering your loft, always do things at half speed in the loft, if you clean them out whilst they're in the loft always start cleaning in the same place and slowly work your way along, now and again drop little bits small seed around your feet as you go.
Babybird Posted June 23, 2009 Author Report Posted June 23, 2009 u r givin to much to eat cut the feed down and they will soon be looking for u always have handfae peanuts in ur pocket as atreat now and again good luck Thanks Jimmy, how do I get them hungry tho? just not feed them for a few days or just give them a little every day?
edwards Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 food is the only way to the birds heart mate try feeding twice a day for example 30 birds 28oz of food 14 in the morning and 14 in the evening but berfor the evening feed have some trapping seed in your the loft coat pocket or tin and kneel down dropping some in front of you and then putting your hand out with trapping seed in it do this for a couple of days and they will some come to you more ofthen than a littel but remember when training starts the food is put up to at least an oz and a quarter each it works well for us plus the young birds digest there food better over two feeds fact and tip bud good luck.

chickadee Posted June 24, 2009 Report Posted June 24, 2009 Hi Babybird Let them settle in first and get used to their new home before you try and tame them, mines are tame because I raise them that way. Patience and it will come but not to all of them as some never tame, you may just spook them if you try too hard

Guest IB Posted June 24, 2009 Report Posted June 24, 2009 In my opinion, tameness has nothing at all to do with feeding, its the loft environment and how you behave in it. If there is plenty headroom, or if you go shouting & barging about the loft they will be wild; slow movement and talking quietly to each and every bird you 'pass', make sure of that & they will learn that they have nothing to fear from you, come to trust you, and tameness follows.
