Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 i never clean the nest bowl in the widowhood loft i clean round it and under it but that bowl and nest is part of the cocks box he built it and will defend it so im not going to destroy it for him as you will take some of the motivation out of him
Roland Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 Have a false piece of plywood that fits the box. - Not going to use nest bowls anymore, going back to placing bricks at right angles. Then at 10 daysold, youngsters will lift them out. Will sling the board and rubbish out and replace with clean bricks, warmed up with a blow torch. Old bricks cleanse and burnt with blow torch. Will then do same as and when needed. Gets the youngsters used to me, and being handled as well.

Guest Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 hi the one im thinking about is a foot high hello again Wes , personaly if its a racer i would leave well alone. however if in the stock loft ,i would be tempted to reduce it , if they lay again and new eggs tumble out , could be very upsetting . all the best mate . andy.

Roland could it not effect the keel bone if the youngster isnt in a bowl? just i heard somewhere that the risk of the bone not being straight could be higher if the baby isnt in a bowl?
Guest youngboy Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 am i leave the nest bowl unless it gets too dirty!! but i clean out the boxes everyday!
wilkins Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 i clean then once the young are about 9-10 days old
Craig05 Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 i do use the folding cardboard under and behind the nest bowl, easy to remove from the box and replace with a new one as needed.
jimmy white Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 hi when do you clean away the nest bowl after the young has feathers do you leeve till weand or do you clean every day or just clean around the bowl everyday i leave whats in the nest pan, but lift the nest pan each day, then scrape the base of the nest box, spray lightly with virkon s . the clay nest pans have air holes in the bottom, i have found these air holes completely useless , as theres a rim around the base rendering these air holes useless!! by placing the nest pan on a small folded wire grill, or a couple of slats of wood,, keeps the nest pan slightly above the floor of the nest box , allowing the air to circulate , and eliminate the damp patch under the nest pan ,especialy when theres big yb,s in the nest
