i let my young birds go at 2 miles today at 11:15 they homed in 7 mins but then flew around until 13 05 non stop i was in the garden the whole time watching them they wondered off and back several times but didnt land once and they are going hard threw the moult as theyre on the darkness  anyone elses youngbirds flying really well

Posted

Mine havent even been out yet :-)

think your waiting your time with the 2 miles mate!! But must be nice and fit and healthy,

why do you need to train them yet mate? Far to early imo, and the shies will be full of old birds training, so be careful mate. all the best with them though :-)

i agre mate too early to train young and there aint nothing wrong with them flying along time if they are roaming,

but 2 miles is a bit of waste of time if they fly that long after you take them,

if i were you would loose them out have there fly then take them after a hours rest

training after they have had there fly out and would start at 5 miles,

just basket training really at these short tossess but as for training young birds early i did the same last year and out of 11 races was only out the top 3 twice last year had brilliant results also won top yb flier first year with birds on my own but i cant change anything as it worked last year i train my ybs when every1 trains there old birds its a doddle get them mature nice and quick

Do you train them right upto yb racing then mate? does it affect there moult attall? obviously you said there in heavy moult at present.??

well done on last years results mate :-)

just out of interest wouldnt it have been better to let them out for a fly first to burn off there energy, then basket and trained, as i like my birds to associate the basket with quick trapping and as soon as the basket is opened they have to race home and enter as quickly as possible

aye i know what your saying but such short tossess i aint to bothered about when i get some bigger tossess in then yes i would have them trapping quickly but for ybs to fly good it has to be healthy for them i let them out just now at 0945 and theyve disappeared off wondering good to see as well

Goes to show there are no hard or fast rules for racing pigeons, and like you say if not broken.....

Keep us informed how these YBs go as old birds.

they are just back now thats an hour but still flying around the house none landed yet must be gud lol they must push them selves tho because when they land they are panting for a drink and thats what they do first straight to the drinker then to the food except the fat greedy one  ;D

If It's working for you mate, well done but it's not something I would do.As you say the flew  a couple of hour at home ,so they've learned to come home but they don't know why they've come home,if you get what I mean.Did you let them have a fly before you took them training ? and was it feed time when you took them?

Lindsay.

no they never had a fly before i take the ybs about 11 and i dont feed them till they get back in the shed if they mess about the other birds eat their food so its an incentive to get in the shed or no food till next day when they usually one of the first ones in when i took them yesterday they flew for ages but once they landed on roof couple shakes of jug and whistle and every bird was in loft within seconds

However well you did with your birds last year you will do so much better if you show these BABIES some kindness they are not mechanical they do not have a key in there back.If you leave them to range for the next 2 months you will devistate your club.Training yb now is abject folly.

well thats ur opinion and i apreciate that but my birds been out here this morning flying for 1hr 40 now and still flying but its only short tossess just getting used to baskets i like them to just lie in the baskets which when ever i put birds in paniers last year they just crouched and went to sleep i was happy with that but i understand ur veiwsbut if the birds want to fly they will if they dont they wont

Posted

I have had pigeons 50 years i have never had a pigeon get in the pannier by itself. You make it seem these pigeons are expressing an opinion. They are not they are bowing to your will. You should have the good grace to alloww these birds time to mature.
